Book Review – "A Discipleship Primer: Rediscovering Biblical Discipleship"

Posted

discipleship_primerDennis Rogers is passionate about Christians becoming fully devoted followers of Christ. The whole of his ministry, including 27 years as a missionary with the Georgia Baptist Convention, has been spent in encouraging believers to seek a closer walk with Christ.

In Roger’s new book, A Discipleship Primer, he focuses on helping the reader understand the simplicity of what it means to follow Christ. He declares, “Discipleship is the imitation of Him who is the Lord of life.”

While God does not have “favorites,” He desires to have “intimates.” Rogers makes a fervent plea for each of us to become one of God’s intimates, to live with a growing sense of His presence and to be guided and governed by His Spirit.

The book has many poignant and powerful chapters, but I was particularly impressed and inspired by the one entitled “Learning to Live Like Jesus.” In this chapter Rogers included the following quote, which is infinitely true: “Christianity would be incredibly influential in our culture if Christians consistently lived their faith.” Unfortunately, nominal church members have hijacked the name “Christian” so that it is viewed as impotent and inconsequential to the essence of life in our country. The great need of this hour is for believers to resolve to follow Christ anywhere, any time, and at any cost.

The book is not voluminous by any means, but it is filled with inspiring truths that will challenge you to become a more faithful follower of Christ. Any good book on discipleship would include a chapter on disciple making and Roger’s book does that. He declares, “The task of disciple making has been given to all Christ followers and it begins with faithfully sharing with others what God has done for us. If others see His life in us, opportunities will arise for spiritual conversations.”

I heartily commend the book to those who want to become surrendered saints and faithful followers of Christ. For more information about A Discipleship Primer contact Dennis Rogers at papamoose97@gmail.com o
