PG rating is a good thingBy Tommy Kennedy, Senior Pastor, Southern Crescent Baptist, McDonoughPublished August 3, 2006
I have been watching with great curiosity the furor over the PG rating for the new movie Facing the Giants. For Christian parents the PG rating should not be a problem at all. We should always be vigilant and know the general content of movies that our children see. Christian “parental guidance” has been in place longer than the movie industry has been around. As Christians, we have God’s commandment to “go and make disciples.” Penetrating the current culture with an accurate and relevant movie that communicates a Christian message is difficult at best. If we want lost teenagers to see this movie then a PG rating is a blessing. The truth is that lost teenagers don’t typically go to G rated movies. They consider G movies for babies and small children – on the order of Dumbo and Snow White. Teens will go to see a movie about a football team that has a PG rating. They would be even more likely to go if the rating was PG-13. We should consider the current PG rating for Facing the Giants as bait on the hook so that we can be more effective fishers of men. If we only want Christians to see this movie, let’s picket the movie industry until they change the rating to G so we can feel better about ourselves. If we want to reach lost people, let’s use the PG rating to our advantage so that more lost people can hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It’s not about us, it’s about Him! |
