The Open Door

Georgia has experienced some extreme weather this spring. Tornadoes touched down into areas of our state causing death, injury, damage to homes, businesses, and churches, and displacement of families. Georgia Baptist disaster relief volunteers have been on the scene, providing outstanding ministry and service to those in need.

A few weeks ago, I received this letter from Mr. Keith Alvey of the American Red Cross regarding our ministry following the May 8 tornadoes. In his letter, Mr. Alvey expressed appreciation for the work of Mr. Bob Sprinkle, director of the Georgia Baptist Child Care Unit, and the unit volunteers who provided care for children following this storm. In his letter, he describes the Georgia Baptist disaster relief volunteers in this way: “Their donation of time and care was a magnificent expression of compassion and concern for the local residents of Georgia who were affected by this disaster.”

These words also describe the other Georgia Baptist disaster relief volunteer units involved in cleanup and recovery, feeding, communication, and operations following the Mother’s Day tornadoes. How thankful Georgia Baptists should be that our disaster relief volunteers have such unique opportunities to work alongside the American Red Cross in providing much needed assistance in times of disaster.

Please continue to pray for the people who have suffered in the wake of this year’s tornadoes. Join me in a prayer of thanksgiving for the sacrificial service of our Georgia Baptist disaster relief volunteers. Pray for the protection of our disaster relief volunteers who go as ambassadors of Jesus Christ to make a difference in the lives of people affected by disasters.
