ELLIJAY — More than 140 laundry baskets filled the altar and pulpit area of First Baptist Church on Sept. 17 as part of an upcoming outreach to single mothers.
The baskets were filled with household supplies that will be given to the individuals who attend a special “Single Mom Saturday” that the church is sponsoring on Saturday, Oct. 7. There will also be some special touches like a Gideon Bible, hand-made soaps, and a gift card in as many baskets as possible.
Single mothers in Ellijay and Gilmer County will be given the basket, treated to lunch, and have their car washed by the deacons of First Baptist during the event takes that place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the downtown church on Dalton St.
“We just want to reach out to single mothers in our community and give them a special day,” said First Baptist Pastor Glenn Cummings. “We have a new Women’s ministry team who will fellowship with them and let them know God loves them and we understand they face great challenges as a single mom.”
Cummings said, “Our missions committee is preparing the lunch. I focused this fall event toward this group of women because this is one of the largest unreached people groups in America. This event is not about getting them to attend First Baptist Church, although we certainly welcome those who are not active in a local church. This is simply about reaching out to a group of folks in our area who may need a little encouragement.”
Any single mom is welcome to attend this event. This ministry is one of several opportunities that First Baptist has begun to reach out to the community under the new leadership of Cummings.
