ATLANTA — Members of Georgia’s House of Representatives were encouraged to ask God for wisdom to lead through a Jan. 27 devotional led by a Georgia Baptist Mission Board state missionary.

Buck Burch, serving as Chaplain of the Day, offered Solomon’s path to wisdom as a worthy example as the legislators seek to govern their fellow Georgians.

“The truth is that Solomon asked God for wisdom to lead … to make decisions for his people. He was not self-seeking at all, so God granted him that and all that he could have asked for instead.

“He could have sought after riches of fame, but he asked for the ability to lead, and that was wise.”

'He who finds wisdom gets life'

Burch, a former International Mission Board missionary to Russia, then noted that Solomon, in his writings, noted that “’He who finds wisdom gets life."

"That same wisdom is available to us today as close as a prayer asking God for the gift. As a matter of fact, in James 1:5 God reveals ‘If anyone lacks wisdom, he can ask God who will give in abundance.’”

The interim pastor of First Ellijay then closed by praying that the elected leaders “would be blessed with a wisdom that is beyond yourself, that the decisions that you make would leave a legacy of life. And that in all of our decisions we make whether in the stately halls here or in the warm hallways in our homes, I prayer that the next generation could never say, ‘They lost sight of God.’”
