Shorter University served as the home site for a camp hosted by LifeWay Christian resources and attended by more than 1,400 students from Long Hollow Baptist Church in Hendersonville, TN. Deaths

Marcus Hicks Marcus Hicks

Longtime Georgia Baptist pastor and denominational leader Marcus Hicks died July 10 at his residence in Ellerslie. He was 74.

Born on Christmas Day in 1940 in Rome, Hicks was a graduate of Midwestern Seminary who served as pastor of New Hope South Baptist Church in Chattooga Association, Turners Chapel Baptist Church in Rome, Trinity Baptist Church in Manchester, and Pine Mountain First Baptist Church in Pine Mountain. As an associational missionary, he served churches in Bethel Association (1984-1998) and the West Georgia Area Mission Program (1998 to his retirement in 2009).

At the time of his death he was a member of Hunter Road Baptist Church in Fortson.

Survivors include his wife, Martha; daughter Loraine Strickland, of Pine Mountain; sons Mark, of Pensacola, Fla., and William, of Columbus; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Elaine Fincher and Betty Stewart, both of LaGrange; and brothers Bobby, of LaGrange, and Gary, of Franklin. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia; grandson, Marcus “Chip” Hicks; and sister, Linda Smith.

Ministerial Moves

Rentz Baptist Church recently called Cliff Ford as youth/children’s pastor. Previously he served in the same position at First Baptist Church, Oil City, La. Ford began his ministry at Rentz on May 27.

Ricky Downs has been called to Faith Baptist Church in Kite as pastor. His wife Tammy joins him.

Cuthbert First Baptist Church welcomed Dustin Simmons as worship pastor on June 15. Morgan, his wife, joins him.

What’s Happening

New Hope Baptist Church in Lincolnton will have homecoming on Aug. 9 at 11 am. Revival will follow Aug. 10-12, beginning at 7 p.m.

Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton will have revival services Aug. 23-26 with Jeff Meyers preaching.

Tabernacle Baptist Church on Jimmy Lee Smith Parkway in Hiram will host Preaching With Power, an event Sept. 17 beginning at 10 a.m. Speakers include GBC President Don Hattaway, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Cartersville; Jerry Speer, pastor of Northside Baptist, Columbus; Terry Braswell, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist, Douglasville; Herman Parker, pastor of First Baptist Bremen; and J. Gerald Harris, editor of The Christian Index. Music will be provided by Inheritance.
