Obituary: Chad Brand, former seminary professor and pastor

Dr. Chad Owen Brand, professor, pastor, and author died Monday in Monterey, Tennessee. He was 69 years old.

He was also a former Kentucky Baptist pastor, serving as an interim from February 2013 to January 2014 at Salyersville Baptist Church. He drove there from Elizabethtown every week to help the church through a difficult time. Brand was a part-time pastor at Mount Zion in Elizabethtown from Dec 2003 to May 2004. He was the pastor of Northside in Elizabethtown from 2008 to November 2010.

Kyle McDanell, the pastor of East Frankfort Baptist Church and the state minister at the Capitol Commission, paid tribute to Brand on social media.

“I just received the news that my favorite professor from seminary just passed. I was blessed to learn from Chad Brand from my first semester to my last. He was brilliant, articulate, and sensitive to the needs of students. Although an academic, he had a pastoral heart.”

Joey Rainey, the lead pastor at Covenant Church in Washington, D.C., said Brand’s teaching influenced him when he attended SBTS.

“If you had asked me as a 20-year-old which people would influence my thinking/approach to ministry, an Historical Theology Professor would not have made the list. I was wrong. Very thankful for Dr. Chad Brand’s influence on me. Praying for his family as they grieve his loss,” Rainey wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Evert Staib, a student from the 2004 class of Boyce College, also wrote a tribute to Brand.

“His love for the Lord, his love for his family, his love for the church, and his love for teaching his students was always evident,” Staib wrote. “Prayers for Tina and the entire family. One story: When he was in seminary and was pastoring a small church in west Texas. He showed up to preach and forgot there was to be a baptism and forgot extra clothes to wear. He found a t-shirt in the car and put it on for the baptism. After the baptism he was front row center of a family picture wearing a Led Zepplin t-shirt. Priceless, love you Brother Chad.”

Brand is survived by his wife of 41 years, Tina Burton Brand, and his three children - Tashia (Craig) Pyle, Chad Brand II, and Cassie (Derek) Sharp - and 10 grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be Saturday, Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. from the Chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, Tenn.
