MACON — In Luke 4, Jesus preached in the synagogue and declared His simple mission theology, Michael Pigg, teaching pastor at Philadelphia Baptist Church in Lithonia, said during the Missional Sermon at the 2020 Georgia Baptist Convention annual meeting at Ingleside Baptist Church Nov. 9.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor,” Pigg said, quoting Luke 4:18-19.

“Oh, my brothers and sisters, how I wish every pastor, every preacher, every missionary, every testimonial person, every teacher, when they stand up to open the word of God, can use those words amicably with fierce ferociousness like a hurricane,” Pigg said.

If a preacher stands in a pulpit and doesn’t have the Spirit of the Lord on him, something is wrong, he said.

“He who has actually called you and equipped you is now desiring to speak through you,” Pigg continued.

It wasn’t a coincidence that Jesus chose to read this passage in the synagogue, though.

“He preached the one that reminds us that we need something greater than who we are to become better than what we wish we could be. He wanted to preach something to remind us that God did come for a reason. He came that our life, that we could have it more abundantly, fresh and anew by the spiritual presence of God.”

From this passage, Pigg sees Jesus’ simple missional theology as a threefold command: 1) evangelize the sinner, 2) be an encourager, and 3) live the life that Jesus has set up for you.

This missional theology is the key to church growth as well, Pigg said.

"If you want your church to be full, go find some lost people," he admonished pastors. “There’s going to be a day when all of this pays off."

Overseas missions, state missions, community missions, Disaster Relief – all of these things have a purpose.

“The biggest thing is even though we’re helping a person get shelter, even though we’re helping a person have sustenance … There’s one greater value of it. It all points to Jesus,” he added, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling the Great Commission.
