A step in obedience

Read Mark 14:12-21.

In Mark 14, we read about Jesus’ final week. He has made the triumphal entry into Jerusalem and He has cleansed the temple. The Jewish authorities are incensed. They have put a bounty on His head.

However, in accordance to Old Testament prophecies, it was vital for Jesus to be in Jerusalem at the Passover. After all, He is the fulfillment of the Passover. Because Jesus is a marked man, He must be very secretive as to where He and His disciples will observe the Passover meal.

So, Jesus sends two of His disciples into Jerusalem with the instructions to look for a man carrying a pitcher and say to him, “The Teacher says, ‘Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” In response the man with the pitcher would lead them to a prepared upper room.

The disciples do as Jesus says, and everything happens exactly the way Jesus said it would. It would be in this room that Jesus would institute the Lord’s Supper. It would be in this room that Jesus would tell Judas, “What you do, do quickly.” However, all of this took place because two disciples took Jesus at His word and they did exactly what He said.

Obedience is important if you are serious about following God’s will. It is important that you take that step of obedience in faith. You don’t know all that is going on, but God does and when He leads you to do something then it is best to do it.

This devotion is based on Marty McLain's book "The Crown has Fallen: A Study of the Kings of Judah."
