“We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed (be rendered powerless or inoperative), and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For he who has died is freed from sin.” (Romans 6:6-7 RSV)
It took eight years before my wife and I were able to have our first child, Samuel. Friends we had made throughout our lives and ministry were ecstatic. You could tell, we had six showers in three states and enough baby clothes and toys to start a retail shop. But there was one toy that I will never forget.
Press a button and it played music. DO NOT press a button and it would still play music, twice doing so at 3 a.m. The first time I thought a thief’s cell phone had went off. But I found a solution. The second I took the battery out it rendered the toy powerless.
That is what Christ did on the cross. If you will, my identification with Christ’s death rendered my flesh/sin nature powerless. I have been set free from the dominion of the sin nature. The batteries have been removed!
So, I no longer am to be an instrument of sin. Rather, my life can be a symphony of obedience bringing glory to God and giving light to the world.
