Sr Pastor

Bethany Baptist Church in McDonough, GA is seeking a Senior Pastor. 

Qualifications

  • The Senior Pastor shall be a Christian and an active member of Bethany Baptist Church.
  • The Senior Pastor must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, [and] able to teach (1 Timothy 3:2).
  • The Senior Pastor preferred to:
    • Have a 4 year College Degree
    • Have a Masters Degree from an accredited seminary
    • Have previous experience as a lead pastor
  • The Senior Pastor, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word of the Bible, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it (Titus 1:7-9).
  • The Senior Pastor must not be a recent convert; he must be well thought of by outsiders (1 Timothy 3:6-7).
  • The Senior Pastor should not be domineering over those entrusted to him but should be an example to the flock (1 Peter 5:3).
  • The Senior Pastor reports to the Church Trustees.  (Note:  As a ministerial position, initial employment and termination must be ratified by the church members in conference.)

Job Description

  • The Senior Pastor should be a servant leader who is eager to shepherd, lead and oversee the ministries of Bethany Baptist Church.
    • Direct plans for ministry and church growth.
  • The Senior Pastor should demonstrate a passion, ability, and willingness to share Christ and disciple others.
  • The Senior Pastor should be a clear and effective communicator fashioned with a spirit of unification and edification.
  • The Senior Pastor should equip church members through preaching and teaching in a regular pulpit ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12); guard the significant time required for prayer and study to fulfill this responsibility; oversee pulpit supply in the case of absence.
  • The Senior Pastor should preach expository sermons that open the Word of God, expound its truths, and apply it to our lives.
  • The Senior Pastor should lead the congregation in observing Scriptural Baptism and the Lord’s Supper 
  • The Senior Pastor should set an example of a servant leadership, engage others by casting a compelling vision to the leadership and congregation to glorify God. 
  • The Senior Pastor should participate in the evangelism efforts of the church through visitation, community outreach efforts, and by giving invitations during worship services. (Acts 1:8)
    • Encourage servant evangelism and outreach through community service projects.
  • The Senior Pastor should champion opportunities for spiritual growth (discipleship) and encourage members to consistently disciple others (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Timothy 2:2).
  • The Senior Pastor should champion the mission partnerships of the church. (Acts 1:8)
  • The Senior Pastor should actively participate in the local Southside Baptist Network, GA Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Convention activities.
  • The Senior Pastor should facilitate the contact and visitation of homebound, hospitalized, and grieving church members.
  • The Senior Pastor should oversee church discipline (1 Corinthians 5) and manage conflict in the church and staff.
  • The Senior Pastor should moderate the regularly scheduled and special business meetings of the church.
  • The Senior Pastor should provide pastoral care to individuals, couples, and families in the church and community as needed regarding personal challenges. Refer to a licensed counselor or for other resources as needed. 
    • The Senior Pastor should assist the Lead Associate Pastor in developing curriculum for church programs including Sunday school and discipleship training.
      • Implement a midweek discipleship program that focuses on in-depth spiritual training.
    • The Senior Pastor should oversee pastoral staff; have a passion to mentor and provide regular guidance, evaluation, and feedback for each of their ministry roles.
      • Consistently schedule and lead staff meetings that facilitate staff unity and efficient operation of the church as a whole.
    • The Senior Pastor should complete job evaluations for all ministerial staff in July of each year.
    • The Senior Pastor should officiate at special services such as weddings, funerals, visitation, prayer meetings, etc.
    • The Senior Pastor should work with various standing and special committees in accomplishing their respective duties.
    • The Senior Pastor should cooperate with local and state denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern; monitor changes and developments within the Southern Baptist Convention and keep the church informed.
    • The Senior Pastor should develop a voice in the McDonough community that can address matters of social and civic importance from a Biblical perspective. Maintain relationships with like-minded pastors in McDonough.
    • Other duties as assigned.
