Today, March 18, the Georgia Senate Science & Technology Committee, chaired by Senator Renee Unterman, passed House Bill 481, known as the Living Infants Fairness & Equality Act (LIFE Act). The committee vote was 3 in favor and 2 against. See my video update below:
This legislation sponsored by Representative Ed Setzler recognizes the humanity of children beginning at conception and prohibits abortion from the point of a child having a detectable human heartbeat at approximately six weeks gestational age. This bill reconciles the humanity of the child with existing court precedents in recognizing what science tells us: the point of fetal viability is the presence of a detectable heartbeat, after which the state has a compelling interest to protect human life. Following the committee vote, Governor Brian Kemp released the statement on Twitter, saying: “Today, we took another step to ensure that life is valued and protected in Georgia. I thank the Senate Science and Technology Committee for their work and look forward to HB 481 receiving consideration by the full Senate.”
The bill now is in the Senate Rules Committee waiting to be voted out on the Senate floor for a possible vote THIS FRIDAY at 9:00 a.m. Please contact your state senator and ask them vote in favor of this important lifesaving legislation!
