New pastor at Pickett's Mill, more in People and Places

Graduates

Georgia Baptists joined others in commencement services at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary on May 13. They are:

Brandon Elrod, who currently serves as an intern with Georgia Baptist Mission Board Collegiate Ministries at Valdosta State University and considers First Redeemer Church in Cumming as his home church, earned a Master of Divinity.

Chris White, a ministry associate in Global Ministries at Johnson Ferry Baptist in Marietta, earned a Master of Divinity.

Ministerial Moves

Associational Missions and Convention Planning recently named Michael Gibbs to lead the South Central Missions Program as area missionary. For the last 12 years, Gibbs has served as pastor of Pine Ridge Baptist Church in Brunswick. He begins June 16. 

Bill Gordon was recently named the new missionary for Ebenezer Baptist Association. After surrendering to the ministry and being ordained by First Baptist Church in Dallas, TX, Gordon went on to serve as a pastor in four states as well as an administrator for the Home Mission Board/North American Mission Board for 22 years.

Gordon holds a Doctor of Theology and Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in addition to a Master of Ministry degree from Criswell College in Dallas. He also has served on the adjunct faculties of NOBTS, Liberty University, and Luther Rice Seminary. He's joined by his wife of 42 years, Patricia.

Pickett's Mill Baptist Church in Dallas recently called Johnny Nix as senior pastor. 

Johnny and Hannah Nix, alongside their daughters Faith, Hope, and Joy, will have their first Sunday at Pickett's Mill on June 4, when Johnny Nix will preach his first sermon as senior pastor.

Called into the ministry when he was ten years old, Nix has conducted more than 150 meetings per year and pastored four churches in Georgia and Tennessee. Most recently, he served at Wartburg First Baptist Church. A graduate of Liberty University, Tennessee Temple University, and Andersonville Theological Seminary, where he earned his Bachelor of Theology, Nix is currently enrolled at Crown College pursuing a Master of Ministry degree.

Nix is joined by his wife, Hannah, and daughters Faith, Hope, and Joy. He begins at Picket's mill on June 4.

Walt Tompkins was called as pastor and ordained at Pine Hill Baptist Church in Mallary Baptist Association on April 23.

Donnie Wright recently retired after 35 years of service as pastor at Pine Hill Baptist Church in Mallary Baptist Association. 

What's Happening

Cooperville Baptist Church in Ebenezer Baptist Association will hold its 115th homecoming service Aug 13. Singing will begin at 10 a.m., with worship starting at 11 a.m. Pastor Charles Asbell will preach. All are welcome to stay for a covered dish meal. 

Valley Brook Baptist Church in Decatur will have homecoming services June. 4. Morning worship begins at 10:30 a.m. with lunch to follow in the fellowship hall. Meats, bread, and beverages will be provided, but attendees are asked to provide a side dish and/or dessert to share.
