Former Georgia Baptist pastor and Foreign Mission Board missionary J. Carlton Duke died Aug. 11.

A native of Meriwether County, Duke was a graduate of Shorter College (now Shorter University) and Southeastern Seminary. He began his ministry as pastor of Holly Springs Baptist Church in 1959 before being appointed by the FMB in 1963 to serve in the Middle East, which he would do until 1977. In retirement he served many churches in various positions. Duke was a member of First Baptist Church of Rockmart at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Annie Ruth Cohran Duke, of Rockmart; brother Richard Bruce Duke, of Rockmart; sisters Sybil Duke Wright of Franklin and Nell Duke Baldwin, of Rockmart; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Jessica Carol Duke and Judy Duke Reed.

What's Happening

Grovetown First Baptist Church will have Revival at the Grove starting Sunday evening, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. continuing through Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. nightly. Thomas Hammond, Georgia Baptist Convention president and pastor of Alpharetta First Baptist, will be preaching.

On Sunday, Sept. 25 First Baptist Church of Thomasville is hosting a “Festival of Congregational Singing” to mark organist Margaret Grady’s 50 years as a key figure in the musical part of worship at the church. The event begins at 4 p.m. and will be followed by a catered reception.

Organ music will be provided by Al Travis, distinguished professor emeritus of organ at Southwestern Seminary. He is also the organist and director of music at Broadway Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, TX. Travis will be joined by a brass group and choir.

It’s free and the public is invited.

Irwinton Baptist Church in Ebenezer Association will have homecoming Sept. 18 with a piano concert by Jeff Cleghorn. Jimmy Baughcum will preach. Revival will begin that night with Mark Grinsted preaching and Cleghorn leading worship. Services continue each evening at 7 p.m. through Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Stone Creek Baptist Church in Ebenezer Baptist Association will have homecoming services Sept. 11 at 10:30 a.m. with lunch following. Revival services will commence the next night through the 16th, beginning at 7 p.m. nightly with Pastor Chris Mitchell.
