Stone, White issue call for Georgia Baptists to pray at SBC annual meeting

BLACKSHEAR — Georgia Baptists are being urged to join in prayer – no matter their location – for a focused gathering preceding the annual Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Dallas.

Georgia Baptist Convention President Mike Stone, pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, issued the call today alongside J. Robert White, Georgia Baptist Mission Board executive director. Citing ongoing discourse and “difficult days” within the SBC, Stone opined in a news release on the need as well as danger facing all Southern Baptists.

“Our greatest need is not primarily relational, financial, or institutional,” he said. “Neither is it cultural, generational, or methodological. Our greatest need is spiritual. And our only hope is the God of Heaven.

“Our greatest danger as a people is not declining baptisms, social media abuse, or decreased giving. These are symptoms and they must be addressed. But our greatest danger is the chastisement of God. It is the displeasure of our Father, a Father who does not need us to do His work.”

The meeting is slated for Monday, June 11 at approximately 9:15 p.m. at the Omni Dallas Hotel, Arts District 5, Level 2. It will follow the Pastors Conference being held at the adjacent Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. With no program or agenda, the prayer gathering is expected to end around 10 p.m.

A prayer guide for the event will be forthcoming, Stone told The Index.
