Barnett remembered for service in churches, associations

ELLIJAY — George D. Barnett, whose 49 years in ministry included being a pastor at several Georgia Baptist churches and employee with the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, died Oct. 24. He was 75.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Barnett served as a Georgia pastor in the Marietta churches of Rose Lane Baptist, Noonday Baptist, and Olive Springs Baptist, Tattnall Square Baptist Church in Macon, Christ Place Church in Flowery Branch, and Mountaintown Baptist in Ellijay. He also was pastor of Kent Baptist Church in Kent, Ind. For 25 years he served in associational work for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board and for 10 months as associational missions strategist for Floyd Baptist Association.

Barnett also served as an interim pastor for numerous churches across northern Georgia and taught at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary extension campus in Marietta.

Preceded in death by his brother, David, and sister, Linda Turner, he is survived by his wife of 56 years, Toni; sons George D. “Bo” Barnett, Jr., of Oxford, and John Barnett, of Louisville, Ky.; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a sister, Tenny Wade, of Guntersville, Ala.

Visitation will take place tonight, Oct. 26, from 4-8 p.m. at Logan Funeral Home in Ellijay. Services will be held 2 p.m. Oct. 27 at Mountaintown Baptist Church with John D. Barnett and Charles Drummond officiating. Pallbearers will be Todd Campbell, Fred Beasley, Matt Coleman, Dylan Westbrook, Justin Burney, and Colby Westbrook.
