Chavez, Caner named to SBC Committee on Committees; Caner to serve as chairman

A Gainesvile pastor of an Hispanic congregation and a president of one of Georgia Baptists three educational institutions will represent the state convention on the Southern Baptist Convention’s Committee on Committees.

Javier Chavez,  pastor of Amistad Cristiana International in Gainesville, will be joined by Emir Caner, president of Truett McConnell University in Cleveland. SBC President Steve Gaines announced the appointments on April 6.

Caner, a member of Helen First Baptist Church, will be one of two Georgians who have been chose to serve on the committee. He previously served on the Committee in 2016 and has served as president of the North Georgia university since August 2008.

Gaines, pastor of the Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, TN, will end his second one-year term as president of the SBC at the June annual meeting of the denomination.

The Committee on Committees has 68 members, two from each of the 34 states and regions qualified for representation on boards of SBC entities.

The Committee on Committees will assemble in Dallas just prior to the SBC's June 12-13 sessions to nominate members of the Committee on Nominations who, in turn, will nominate trustees for the boards of SBC entities in 2019.

Gaines announced the appointments in accordance with SBC Bylaw 19, which calls for providing notice to Southern Baptists of the appointees at least 45 days in advance of each year's annual meeting.
