Etsio lifts Shorter past West Alabama in men's soccer

LIVINGSTON, AL — Austen Trevers recorded his second shutout of 2016, and Jordan Etsio scored the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to lead Shorter past the West Alabama Tigers, 1-0.

West Alabama outshot the Hawks 15-9 in the game, but it was Etsio who scored the lone goal of the contest off an assist from Justen Macias.

Shorter's shots were evenly distributed with eight different players taking attempts. Mauricio Rancel led the Hawks with two tries. Four of Shorter's nine shots were on goal, whereas 10 of West Alabama's looks were on goal.

Shorter's Trevers faced 15 shots and made 10 saves. Three of his 10 stops came in the final 15 minutes of play, as he held off a late charge from the Tigers and preserved the victory for the Hawks.

For West Alabama, Brad Lewis played the entire 90 minutes. He faced nine shots and made three saves.

The Hawks improve to 5-5-1 (4-1-1 Gulf South Conference), while the Tigers drop to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in GSC play.

Shorter returns to action on Friday, as the team plays three straight home games to close out the regular season. First up, the Hawks welcome the Delta State Statesmen to Rome. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, 2016.
