Is the U.S. Constitution in jeopardy?

President Barack Obama announced yet another one of his executive orders on Jan. 5. He went into the East Room of the White House and informed the nation that he was imposing new restrictions on the sale of firearms in the United States. By doing so he violated the principle invoked in the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution.

The Washington Post explained, “The 37-minute speech became part eulogy, part admission of political failure, and part constitutional lecture on the Second Amendment.

“Eventually, the president cried.

“Flanked by more than a dozen men and women, many of whom he had consoled privately shortly after they lost loved ones to gun violence, Obama summoned the memory of nearly two dozen children killed three years ago in their Connecticut school. He decided on the new curbs unilaterally, he said, because guns have cut short too many American lives.”

“'Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad,’ he said, wiping a tear from his right eye. ‘And, by the way, it happens on the streets of Chicago every day.’ This time he flicked away a tear from his left cheek.”

The president failed to mention that Chicago ranks as one of the most regulated cities in the nation for gun control.

The Daily Caller reported last Oct. 6 that someone in Chicago had been shot every 2.84 hours for a total of 2,349 shootings during the period of Jan. 1, 2015 to Oct. 6, 2015.

While the president is apparently sincere and perhaps even well meaning, the reality of what is happening in Chicago illustrates that the president’s solution to gun violence in America is about as effective as an aspirin dispensary in a leper colony.

It is difficult to understand how the president could become so emotional about gun violence and at the same time favor the funding of America’s foremost abortion factory, Planned Parenthood, even though it has been reported that the entity has been guilty of selling body parts.

The president had family members of those who had been murdered in the East Room of the White House to attempt to give credence and validity to his executive order. While we all grieve with those who have been impacted by such assaults, we also acknowledge that the president’s mandate to restrict the sale of guns was not based on facts or reason, but on emotion.

How can our leadership decree laws to control the use of firearms when we are living in an age of terrorism and violence - a time when thugs and hooligans have no trouble gaining access to guns of all kinds?

When the president issues an executive order he is actually abusing the Executive Office, because such orders violate the intent of the United States Constitution. I fear that most Americans fail to grasp the significance of his actions. By changing the law solely based on his own desires, the president has acted on the principle that he can rewrite laws and – since this is a principle – not just a law, but any law.

The main responsibility the Constitution assigns to the president is to faithfully execute the laws. If the president rejects this job, if instead he decides he can change or ignore laws he does not like, then what?

The time will come when Congress passes a law and the president ignores it. Or he may choose to enforce some parts and ignore others. Or he may not wait for Congress and issue a decree or an edict himself.

In his East Room press conference the president stated, “All of us should be able to work together to find that balance that declares the rest of our rights are important. Second Amendment rights are important and the other rights we care about as well, and we have to be able to balance them.”

Todd Starnes of Fox News stated, “Did you catch that? President Obama said that we have to balance our constitutional rights. Mark my words. That kind of thinking is how the Left will balance our religious liberty, because if they can balance the Second Amendment rights, they will most certainly do the same thing to our First Amendment rights.”

Yes, and most unfortunately, our Constitution is in jeopardy under the reign of the current administration.
