DULUTH — Former Louisiana minister Scott Sullivan will join Georgia Baptists as Discipleship catalyst beginning in September, a statement from the office of Executive Director W. Thomas Hammond, Jr., announced Monday, July 29.
Sullivan most recently served as equipping pastor of First Baptist Church in Haughton, near Shreveport, a position he had held since 2003. He holds bachelor’s degree from East Texas Baptist University, Master of Arts in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Education Ministry degree, also from NOBTS.
While at his church position Sullivan also was a discipleship consultant for the Louisiana Baptist Convention and adjunct teacher for NOBTS. He is currently president-elect off the Baptist Association of Christian Educators (BACE) and the author of two books – “Impact: Student Leadership Devotional,” and “Together We Equip.” Sullivan served in student ministry for 25 years before moving into his role as equipping pastor.
As Discipleship catalyst, Sullivan will head one of the five groups making up the Church Strengthening team for Georgia Baptists led by lead strategist Mark Marshall. Those groups joining Discipleship are: Evangelism, Missions, Next Gen, and Music and Worship. Levi Skipper was announced as leading Evangelism in May while longtime state missionary Buck Burch will be heading the group focused on Missions. In addition, Collegiate Ministries will work within conjunction of the efforts under Church Strengthening.
Each of those groups will have a consultant assigned to each of the six regions in the state. In Discipleship, Tim Smith will serve those churches in the Northwest while Mike Taylor will do so in the West Central region. Consultants for regions in the Northeast, East Central, Southwest, and Southeast areas of the state will be forthcoming.
Sullivan, 48, and his wife, Elizabeth, have four children: Erika, Austin, Caleb, and Noah.
“Scott is a great leader and sought-out speaker helping churches with the development of leadership and implementation of effective discipleship strategies,” said Hammond. “I ask Georgia Baptists to pray for Scott and his family as they make a big transition to Georgia and help him feel warmly welcomed when he begins in September.”
