Pastor Al Wright to be nominated as GBC Vice President

WAYNESBORO – Al G. Wright, who has served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro since 1991, will be nominated by Robert (Bob) Jolly for vice president of the Georgia Baptist Convention.

Pastor Al Wright and his wife, Anne, have served the Lord at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro for 27 years.

In a telephone interview Wright stated, “I was asked to allow my name to be placed before the Convention as a vice presidential nominee. As I prayed about putting my name in the hat, I did so simply because of how really and truly good God has been to me through Georgia Baptists. I am not a Georgia Baptist because I was born and raised in a GBC church; I was raised in no church and chose by God’s grace to commit to and live my life in and through the SBC and GBC.”

Wright was recently featured in The Christian Index regarding “his journey to Biblical inerrancy.” In his search for truth he finally concluded, “The Bible is the final, eternal, absolute, and sufficient authority on all things so that if something Baptist is in conflict with the something biblical, the Bible will win every time.” His educational background includes a Th. M. at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Ph. D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

The Waynesboro pastor has led his church to contribute 10 percent of its undesignated gifts to the Cooperative Program. The church also gives generously to the Mission Georgia, Annie Armstrong, and Lottie Moon offerings.

Wright explained to The Christian Index, “We have sent or are sending four families from our church family to serve on the mission field, from helping with a church plant just outside Washington, D. C. to serving in the Republic of Georgia with the IMB as part of a church planting team. We also have partnerships with churches in Canada, Belarus, Ukraine, Kenya and Liberia.”

While Pastor Wright has provided great leadership for his church, he has also been a vital part of Georgia Baptist life. He has served as a member of the Order of Business Committee for the GBC, served as the chairman of the Board of Directors for Penfield Christian Homes, and taught as an adjunct professor for Brewton-Parker College.

Currently Wright serves on the Executive Committee and the Administration Committee for the GBC and recently was on the search team that recommended Thomas Hammond as the new executive director of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board.

“I am married to my high school sweetheart, Anne, now for almost 46 years,” Wright testifies. “We are blessed with two grown and married children and four grandchildren.”

The election of officers is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon Nov. 13 at the GBC annual session at Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins.
