DULUTH — In a move designed to speed up response time and get help quickly to those in affected areas, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief is providing an avenue to enlist non-credentialed volunteers.
Disaster Relief’s Incident Management Team serves as the liaison for non-credentialed volunteers. Church groups can call (470) 389-3552 to contact a team representative. The group then connects with a host church in an affected area. That church, in turn, coordinates general cleanup for damage.
The step produces logistical differences for non-credentialed groups versus Disaster Relief volunteers. Non-credentialed volunteers should check with the host church on lodging and feeding workers, as those may or may not be provided. DR personnel will not supervise or manage volunteers. Non-credentialed workers should also download and carry copies of the Property Owner Release Form to provide homeowners.
Damage on the coast, inland
Immediate needs for workers relate to wind damage caused by Hurricane Matthew. Disaster Relief chainsaw crews as well as cleanup crews moved on damage in Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn, and Camden counties. Officials from the inland counties of Long, Wayne, Brantley, and Charlton also reported damage.
In addition to cleanup work, volunteers should also expect opportunities to share the gospel. In 2016, Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers have presented the gospel more than 200 times.
