JERSEYDALE, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters significantly slowed the spread of a smoky wildfire burning near Yosemite National Park. Thousands of residents of remote mountain communities are still under evacuation orders Monday. Crews “made good headway” against the Oak Fire, according to a Sunday night incident report. More than 2,500 firefighters are battling the blaze, contending with steep terrain and hot weather.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department is expected to file a lawsuit against some of the largest poultry producers in the United States. It’s part of an effort to end what the government says are longstanding deceptive and abusive practices for workers. Three people familiar with the matter tell The Associated Press the suit is being filed Monday in Maryland. The suit names Cargill, Sanderson Farms, and Wayne Farms, along with a data consulting company.

TOKYO (AP) — Dozens of people have evacuated two towns in southern Japan where a volcano spewed ash and large rocks into the nighttime sky. Large rocks fell as far as 1.5 miles from the Sakurajima volcano Sunday night, and dark smoke with ash billowed from the mountaintop. About 50 residents were advised to leave their homes, and the city of Kagoshima said 33 of them evacuated to a nursing care facility.

The NFL is making its move into offering its own media streaming platform. The league announced that “NFL+” launched on Monday. Owners were briefed about it during the league meetings in May while Brian Rolapp, the NFL’s chief media and business officer, confirmed in a column for “Sports Illustrated” last week that it would be starting this season.

POKROVSK, Ukraine (AP) — Tens of thousands of people who evacuated from Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region are risking their lives by returning to homes close to the front line because they can’t afford to live in safer places. One woman was killed by a missile outside her home just two days after returning.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The death toll from a bus accident in central Kenya has risen to 30, police said Monday. The passenger bus carrying an unknown number of people on Sunday evening fell off a bridge and plunged into a river along a highway from Meru to the capital, Nairobi.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles police are searching for people involved in a weekend shooting at a park in which two people were killed and five wounded. The LA Police Department says the shooting occurred Sunday afternoon at Peck Park in the city's San Pedro neighborhood.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska is burning this year in ways rarely or ever seen. So far this year more than 530 wildfires have burned an area the size of Connecticut and the typically worst of the fire season lays ahead. Among the wildfires already this year was the largest ever in a typically largely fireproof southwest region of the state.

COVID-19 infections are again on the rise and filling families with dread as a new school year approaches. They fear the return of the pandemic scourge of outbreaks that sideline large numbers of teachers, close school buildings, and force students back into remote learning.

It turns out millennials haven't strayed very far from the areas where they grew up. A study released Monday by Harvard University and U.S. Census Bureau researchers found that by age 26 more than two-thirds of millennials lived in the same area where they grew up, 80% had moved less than 100 miles away and 90% resided less than 500 miles away.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — First-place finisher Denny Hamlin was disqualified when his No. 11 Toyota failed inspection, giving Chase Elliott the NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Joe Gibbs Racing had Hamlin’s car and runner-up Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota both disqualified.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabwe has launched gold coins to be sold to the public in a bid to tame runaway inflation that has further eroded the country’s unstable currency. The unprecedented move was announced Monday by the country’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, to boost confidence in the local currency.

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisians are heading to the polls to vote on a new constitution. The controversial initiative has been spearheaded by Tunisian President Kais Saied that critics say will formalize his power grab in the North African nation. Supporters of the president believe the new constitution will solve Tunisia's political deadlock, while others warn it could pave the way back to the autocracy that Tunisians overthrew in 2011.

SAN PEDRO, Calif. (AP) — At least seven people have been injured after gunfire erupted at a Los Angeles park. The LA Police Department said the shooting occurred around 3:50 p.m. Sunday at Peck Park in LA's San Pedro neighborhood. The LAPD said it wasn't an active shooter situation but provided no more information.

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a U.S. marshal and a 19-year-old suspect in a killing have been shot in a mobile home park in an Atlanta suburb. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says both the officer and suspect are expected to recover from the Sunday morning shooting. Investigators say the marshal was helping arrest Antonio Murgado when Murgado fired at officers and they shot back.

SAVANNAH, Ga (AP) — Police say four people have been injured after an elderly person accidentally drove through a popular tourist and shopping district in downtown Savannah. Police tweeted that two adults were seriously injured and two juveniles suffered minor injuries after a driver drove into Ellis Square on Saturday evening.

CAMARILLO, Calif. (AP) — The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline plunged 32 cents over the past two weeks to $4.54 per gallon. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says Sunday that the continued decline comes as crude oil costs also fall. The price at the pump is down 55 cents over the past six weeks, but it’s $1.32 higher than one year ago.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the U.S. economy is slowing but pointed to healthy hiring as proof that it is not yet in recession. Yellen spoke Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” just before a slew of economic reports will be released this week that will shed light on an economy currently besieged by rampant inflation and threatened by higher interest rates.

ATLANTA (AP) — Taylor Ward homered in a five-run first, Reid Detmers pitched five scoreless innings and the Los Angeles Angels cooled off the Atlanta Braves with a 9-1 victory. Max Stassi went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs, and Ward was 3 for 5 with an RBI for the Angels, who improved to 3-14 this month and snapped a five-game skid.

Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark has won his first Tour de France title after coming out on top in a thrilling three-week duel with defending champion Tadej Pogacar. The 25-year-old Vingegaard became the first Danish rider to win cycling’s biggest race since Bjarne Riis in 1996.

The latest tranche announced by the White House Friday comes atop about $8 billion in security assistance provided since the war began in late February.
