Two huge fires feeding on tinder-dry pine forests in the Gironde region have forced tens of thousands of people to flee homes and summer vacation spots since they broke out July 12.

LONDON (AP) — Britain shattered its record for the highest temperature ever registered amid a heat wave that has seized swaths of Europe. The national weather forecaster predicted it would get hotter still Tuesday in a country ill-prepared for such extremes.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian cruise missiles hit villages around the southern Ukraine port city of Odesa overnight, in the latest attack that local authorities say aims to strike fear into the civilian population. An official said Tuesday that in the eastern Donetsk region, infrastructure is being “methodically destroyed” by Russian forces.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Washington Nationals star Juan Soto won his first Home Run Derby. He held off Seattle Mariners rookie Julio Rodríguez in the final 19-18. The 23-year-old Soto hit 53 total homers to win the midseason power showcase, showing off his incredible talent.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The owner of Mississippi's only abortion clinic says she's sold the building and will not reopen the clinic even if a state court allows her to do so. Diane Derzis tells The Associated Press on Monday that the furniture and equipment from Jackson Women’s Health Organization have been moved to a new abortion clinic she will open soon in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

DALLAS (AP) — A former Southwest Airlines flight attendant has won a $5.1 million verdict against the airline and the union for its flight attendants. Charlene Carter alleged that Southwest unlawfully fired her in 2017 at the union's urging over pro-life messages she sent to the union president.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The McGwire family is set to see the other side of things in one of baseball’s best rivalries. Mason McGwire, son of 12-time All-Star slugger Mark, was selected in the eighth round of baseball’s amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Mark spent five of his 16 major league seasons with the rival St. Louis Cardinals, including the memorable 1998 season when he and Cubs star Sammy Sosa raced to break Roger Maris’ single-season home run mark.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukraine’s first lady has arrived in Washington for her highest-profile event since Russian troops invaded her country five months ago. Olena Zelenska launched a U.S. trip Monday that will include a session with first lady Jill Biden. Blue and yellow Ukrainian flags flew alongside American ones on Pennsylvania Avenue as Zelenska headed for a meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

SUNDOWN, Texas (BP) – Coach Brannon Rodgers and others across the U.S. were paying close attention to the Supreme Court ruling in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. By a 6-3 margin, justices ruled that the school district violated coach Joseph Kennedy's First Amendment rights by removing him from his position after he refused to stop praying at midfield following games.

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — The Texas Department of Public Safety announced Monday an internal review over the slow response to the Uvalde school massacre. The review comes after a damning new 80-page report released over the weekend by the Texas House revealed wide failures by all levels of law enforcement.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — U.N. agencies are again warning of rising violence around Haiti’s capital, saying 99 people have been reported killed in recent gang fighting in the Cite Soleil district alone. Saturday's warning came hours after the Security Council approved a resolution renewing the mandate of a U.N. office in the troubled Caribbean nation. U.N. humanitarian agencies say they're ready to help once it's safe to do so.

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. – The Georgia Baptist Mission Board has expanded the SPARK discipleship conference to include in-person training at five regional locations across the state next month. The initial one will be on Aug. 6 at Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins where Woodstock First Baptist Church lead pastor Jeremy Morton will be the keynote speaker.

ATLANTA – Monkeypox vaccines from the federal government began arriving in Georgia Friday, the state Department of Public Health (DPH) announced. The 3,000 Jynneos vaccines received so far is enough to vaccinate 1,500 people, agency spokeswoman Nancy Nydam said. A full vaccination requires two doses 28 days apart.  

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka’s acting president has declared a state of emergency giving him broad authority amid growing protests demanding his resignation two days before the country’s lawmakers are set to elect a new president. Ranil Wickremesinghe became acting president on Friday after his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled abroad and resigned after monthslong mass protests over the country’s economic collapse.

Delta is ordering 100 737 Max 10 airplanes, the largest of the line produced by Boeing, potentially giving the manufacturer additional momentum after a troubled rollout of its most advanced aircraft. Delta has an option to purchase 30 more of the aircraft as the airline looks to keep up with surging travel demand.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Major League Baseball is considering a pitch clock for next year along with shift limits, larger bases, and restrictions on pickoff attempts. A clock experiment in the minor leagues cut the average this year to 2:37 from 3:04 at a similar point for non-clock games last year.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jackson Holliday and Druw Jones, sons of All-Stars Matt and Andruw, were taken by Baltimore and Arizona with the first two picks in baseball’s amateur draft. Holliday, whose father is a former batting champion Matt Holliday, was chosen first by Baltimore over Jones in somewhat of a surprise.

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Currently, Louisiana authorities can't enforce the state's ban on abortion. But that may change, depending on the outcome of a court hearing Monday morning in Baton Rouge. Lawyers for a north Louisiana clinic and other supporters of legal abortion argue that the state law has conflicting language and is unconstitutionally vague.

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — An explosion of violence in South Sudan is raising fears that the country’s fragile peace agreement could unravel before the transitional government wraps up early next year. The wave of near-daily killings across the East African country is often blamed on marauding militias whose sporadic attacks have created a climate of danger at odds with the aspirations of a 2018 truce between President Salva Kiir and his deputy Riek Machar.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s first-ever extreme heat warning is in effect for large parts of England as hot, dry weather that has scorched mainland Europe for the past week moves north, disrupting travel, health care, and schools. The “red” alert will last throughout Monday and Tuesday when temperatures may reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit for the first time, posing a risk of serious illness and even death among healthy people, according to the U.K. Met Office, the country’s weather service.

GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) — Police say three people were fatally shot and two were injured at an Indiana mall after a man with a rifle opened fire in a food court and an armed civilian shot and killed him. Greenwood Police Department Chief Jim Ison says the man entered the Greenwood Park Mall on Sunday evening with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and began firing in the food court.

PARIS (AP) — Firefighters battled wildfires raging out of control in Spain and France, including one whose flames reached two popular Atlantic beaches. Europe wilted under an unusually extreme heat wave Sunday. So far, there have been no fire-related deaths in France or Spain, but authorities in Madrid have blamed soaring temperatures for hundreds of deaths.

MACON, Ga. (AP) — Georgia will issue electronic debit cards by October for women and children who benefit from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. Commonly called the WIC program, it provides food for low-income women during and after pregnancy, as well as children 5 and younger.

VINNYTSIA, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has fired the head of the country’s security service and its prosecutor general. He cited hundreds of criminal proceedings into treason and collaboration by people within their departments. He said Sunday that “more than 60 employees of the prosecutor’s office and the SBU have remained in the occupied territory and work against our state.”
