Tim Tebow is among the former players making a first appearance on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot this year. Tebow led Florida to two national championships and won a Heisman Trophy and has been outspoken in his Christian beliefs. Some of the other former players on the ballot for the first time are quarterback Alex Smith of Utah, wide receiver Justin Blackmon of Oklahoma State, running back Ki-Jana Carter of Penn State, linebacker Luke Kuechly of Boston College and defensive lineman Dewey Selmon of Oklahoma.

Shares of Kohl’s are up more than 12% before the market open on Tuesday after the retailer announced that it is in exclusive takeover talks with the owner of Vitamin Shoppe. Kohl’s said that the exclusive period is for three weeks, with Franchise Group Inc. offering to buy the company for $60 per share.

NEW YORK (AP) — Target is canceling orders from its suppliers, particularly in home and clothing, while slashing prices of goods in a bold move to clear out mounds of unwanted inventory ahead of the critical fall and holiday shopping seasons. The Minneapolis-based discounter announced the move Tuesday.

DETROIT (AP) — Goodyear has agreed to recall more than 173,000 recreational vehicle tires that the government says can fail and have killed or injured 95 people since 1998. Goodyear’s G159 tires have been under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for over five years.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The United States and its Asian allies have flown dozens of fighter jets over waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula in a show of force as their diplomats discussed a coordinated response to a possibly imminent North Korean nuclear test. The flights came as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman traveled to Seoul for discussions with South Korea and Japanese officials over the gathering North Korean threat and warned of a “swift and forceful” counterresponse if the North proceeds with a nuclear test explosion.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia claims it has occupied large swaths of eastern Ukraine after a relentless, weeks-long barrage and the recent deployment of more troops. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday that Moscow’s forces have control of 97% of the Luhansk region.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia health officials say the first case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the state. The Georgia Department of Public Health announced the news Monday on Twitter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a suspected case found last week is monkeypox.

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street was poised to open lower on Tuesday, after a bond sell-off a day earlier fueled anxiety about a possible U.S. economic slowdown. Futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7% and futures for the S&P 500 dipped 0.8%. Global markets mostly declined.

OWO, Nigeria (AP) — Authorities in southwestern Nigeria say the gunmen who killed 50 people at a church opened fire both inside and outside the building in a coordinated attack before escaping. No one has claimed responsibility.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks ticked higher Monday as Wall Street keeps wrestling with whether the economy will successfully avoid a recession amid rising interest rates and high inflation. The S&P 500 edged up 0.3% and the Nasdaq rose 0.4%.

Phil Mickelson is ending his 4-month hiatus from competitive golf and is joining the Saudi-funded rival league. Mickelson was the last big name added to the 48-man field for the LIV Golf Invitational outside London that starts Friday.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BP) – Last week, the SBC’s Sexual Abuse Task Force made several formal recommendations to the messengers for their consideration at the upcoming 2022 SBC Annual Meeting in Anaheim. Among them was a recommendation that an Abuse Reform Implementation Task Force (ARITF), in coordination with the SBC Executive Committee (EC), create a “process” for maintaining a Ministry Check list of pastors, denominational workers, and volunteers who are “credibly accused” of sexual abuse. The messengers should approve this recommendation.

ATLANTA – The Alabama company looking to open a titanium mine near the Okefenokee Swamp is being confronted with an additional hurdle. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reversed an earlier approval of the project and now will require Twin Pines Minerals to reapply for a federal permit. The company already is seeking permits from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.  

DETROIT (AP) — Elon Musk is threatening to end his $44 billion agreement to buy Twitter, accusing the company of refusing to give him information about its spam bot accounts. Lawyers for the Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the threat in a letter to Twitter dated Monday that the social platform included in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

BEIJING (AP) — Diners are returning to restaurants in most of Beijing for the first time in more than a month as authorities further eased pandemic-related restrictions. The moves Monday came after a small COVID-19 outbreak in the capital was largely eradicated under China’s strict “zero-COVID” approach.

COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — Several dozen World War II veterans are expected to attend D-Day commemoration ceremonies Monday in France. For two years, D-Day ceremonies were reduced to a minimum amid COVID-19 restrictions. This year, crowds of French and international visitors are back in Normandy for the 78th anniversary.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The British government says the multiple-launch rocket systems it's offering to Ukraine will bring “a significant boost in capability” for the country’s efforts to resist Russia’s invasion. British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said in a statement Monday that “if the international community continues its support, I believe Ukraine can win” its war against Russia.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The gunmen who attacked a church during Sunday Mass in southwestern Nigeria opened fire inside and outside, killing at least 50 people. No one has claimed responsibility for the massacre, and local authorities said the gunmen had evaded capture.

No. 1 national seed Tennessee, No. 4 Virginia Tech, No. 5 Texas A&M, Texas and Notre Dame closed out their NCAA baseball regionals and advanced to the next round starting Friday. No. 6 Miami was the first top-eight seed eliminated. Tennessee beat Georgia Tech 9-6, never leading until it scored six runs in the ninth inning.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The U.S. and South Korea have launched eight ballistic missiles into the sea in a show of force matching a North Korean display a day earlier that extended a provocative streak in weapons demonstrations. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Monday's drill was aimed at demonstrating an ability to respond swiftly and accurately to North Korean attacks.

DENVER (AP) — Matt Olson hit a three-run homer, Ronald Acuña Jr. had a solo shot among his four hits and the Atlanta Braves moved above .500 for the first time since the season’s opening week with an 8-7 victory over the reeling Colorado Rockies. The Braves completed a four-game sweep and won their season-high fifth straight.
