NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks ended another bumpy week with more losses Friday as investors considered the downside of the still-strong U.S. jobs market. The S&P 500 fell 1.6%, marking its eighth losing week in the last nine. Losses in big technology companies helped pull the Nasdaq down 2.5%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 1%

AMES, Iowa – An Iowa congregation is grieving after a gunman fatally shot two college students and then himself in the church parking lot Thursday night. In a prayer service Friday morning, Cornerstone Church Pastor Mark Vance described the shooting as “something we can’t quite comprehend.”

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A man shot two females to death and then apparently killed himself outside a church in Ames. The Story County Sheriff's Office say the man killed the two females outside the Cornerstone Church, a megachurch on the outskirts of Ames. Investigators didn’t know the ages of those killed.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man who fatally shot two women before killing himself in the parking lot of an Iowa church had been romantically involved with one of the women and faced a court hearing next week on a charge of harassing her. They say 33-year-old Johnathan Lee Whitlatch, of Boone, pulled up in a pickup truck to 22-year-old Eden Montang, 21-year-old Vivian Flores and another woman just before 7 p.m. Thursday outside Cornerstone Church on the outskirts of Ames and began shooting with a 9 mm handgun.

When Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in late February, the Russian president vowed his forces would not occupy the neighboring country. But as the invasion reached its 100th day on Friday, Russia seemed increasingly unlikely to relinquish the territory it has taken in the war. The ruble is now an official currency in the southern Kherson region. Residents there and in Russia-controlled parts of a neighboring region are getting offered Russian passports.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Japanese equipment maker plans to spend $140 million on a new factory in Georgia, adding 500 workers to the 3,000 it already employs in the northeastern part of the state. Kubota Corp. says the new factory will make front-end loaders, opening in Gainesville in 2024.

Tesla shares tumbled more than 7% Friday on a report that CEO Elon Musk is considering laying off 10% of the company’s workers, as well as new questions from U.S. regulators over complaints of vehicles braking for no reason.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Much of the Florida peninsula, along with parts of Cuba and the Bahamas, are under a tropical storm warning as a system that battered Mexico moves through the Gulf of Mexico, bringing threats of heavy rain and wind for the weekend. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said early Friday data from a hurricane hunter plane indicate the system's maximum sustained winds increased overnight and was expected to strengthen later Friday.

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) — One person was hospitalized Thursday and others were sickened by a possible hazardous materials release at a Georgia warehouse. Dublin Fire Chief Matthew Cutler tells local news outlets that firefighters were called to the Best Buy distribution center. More than 20 employees were complaining of irritation to their eyes, nose, and throat from an unknown powdered substance.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons are bringing back their red helmets for their throwback uniforms this season. The Falcons have announced they will bring back the red helmets with black jerseys for the first time since 2012. The team will bring back the combination, which pays tribute to their first uniform in 1966, when they play the San Francisco 49ers in a home game on Oct. 16.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have signed wide receiver Cameron Batson, who comes to the team with connections to coach Arthur Smith and quarterback Marcus Mariota. The 26-year-old Batson had 22 catches for 197 yards with two touchdowns in three seasons with Tennessee, including two with Smith as as tight ends coach and offensive coordinator.

Congressional Democrats are accusing Amazon of obstructing their investigation into the company's labor practices during severe weather events. Amazon's policies have been under scrutiny since the deadly collapse of a company warehouse last year in Edwardsville, Illinois. Regulators found Amazon’s Edwardsville facility met minimal federal safety requirements for storm sheltering, but said it had other safety risks.

VIDALIA, Ga. (AP) — Officials have confirmed a highly contagious variety of bird flu in a backyard flock in southeast Georgia. State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black says it's the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in domesticated birds in Georgia this year. The Toombs County resident kept a flock of chickens, turkeys, ducks, peafowl and other birds. He noticed dozens of ducks died in a 24-hour period.

GUANGZHOU, China (AP) — Dragon boat festivities have returned in parts of China for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic in late 2019 as restrictions are lifted along with a major drop in COVID-19 cases. A historic area in the southern Chinese manufacturing hub of Guangzhou staged boat displays and other celebrations Friday to mark the holiday that commemorates the death more than 2,200 years ago of a revered poet and government minister.

DETROIT (AP) — More than 750 Tesla owners have complained to U.S. safety regulators that cars operating on the company's partially automated driving systems have suddenly stopped on roadways for no apparent reason. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed the number in an information request letter to Tesla that was posted Friday on the agency’s website.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some Afghans who were evacuated from their country as it fell to the Taliban last summer have found their journey to the United States stalled at a cluster of tents and temporary housing at a military base in the Balkans. More than 78,000 Afghans have arrived in the U.S. for resettlement since August. But the fate of people who were flagged for additional security vetting, and diverted to Camp Bondsteel in the small nation of Kosovo, remains up in the air.

LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, joined other members of Britain’s royal family Friday at a church service honoring Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne. The queen herself skipped the event at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London due to difficulties getting around that have limited the 96-year-old monarch’s public engagements in recent months.

DENVER (AP) — Travis d’Arnaud homered twice, including a grand slam, and drove in a career-high six runs as the Atlanta Braves pounced on Colorado’s struggling pitching in a 13-6 rout of the Rockies. D’Arnaud was 3 for 5 and scored three times as the Braves piled up 18 hits against the Rockies, who have allowed 39 runs over the past three games.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares have risen amid mixed signs for investors such as rising energy prices and COVID-19 restrictions easing in China. Shares in France and Germany were higher in early trading, but markets were closed in Britain and China for national holidays.
