CARROLLTON, Ga. — About 20 years ago, Angie Presnal took a spiritual gifts inventory and scored a zero in missions. Today, she helps coordinate mission projects for the Georgia Baptist Jubalheirs and serves as ministry assistant for the Carrollton Baptist Association.
Her journey into missions was unexpected, but Presnal believes God has been directing her steps, even through a battle with stage 4 cancer.
“I am a non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer survivor; in 2020, I was at stage four,” she said. “I truly believe I'm still on this side of heaven because God has a purpose for me here.”
Presnal said her involvement in missions did not come naturally. Over time, however, she began to recognize how God was working in her life and opening doors for service. “The process for me has been learning that missions is what God is doing in my life, because in my flesh, it wasn't there!”
Presnal was part of her church's first international mission team. After that, she said, the doors just kept opening.
During that process, she said the Lord reminded her of something a missionary had said at a camp when she was growing up: “There’s two words that never go together ... No Lord!”
Those words, she said, “have directed me.”
Through her battle with cancer, Presnal found encouragement in Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Presnal recently completed her fifth year working as a ministry assistant with Tim Williams at the Carrollton Baptist Association. She has also served as a chaplain with Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief and, for the past two years, as the Jubalheirs missions officer.
It was through Disaster Relief ministry that she was first introduced to the Jubalheirs in 2015. The Jubalheirs were doing a mission project in conjunction with a concert in Columbus, Georgia, and requested Disaster Relief chaplains to assist them. It was Angie's first Disaster Relief assignment, and she had never heard of the Jubalheirs.
In Columbus, she met many of the Jubalheirs, but one stood out.
“Barbie Doll,” she said. “How could I forget a name like that?”
Presnal, who led a choir at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Carrollton, told the Jubalheirs about her involvement in music ministry. “I lead a choir at my church,” she said.
They invited her to join, but at the time, she was working 40 hours a week, and her schedule would not allow it.
When she went to work for the association in 2021, she had Fridays off. Recalling the invitation to join the Jubalheirs six years earlier, she reached out to a local minister of music involved in the Jubal ministries. He helped her get in touch with the ministry, and she joined in 2022.
Through the Jubalheirs, Presnal has helped coordinate mission projects supporting pregnancy resource centers, food pantries, housing needs for people who have completed rehabilitation programs, and weekend food bags for children to take home on Fridays.
As the Jubalheirs missions officer, she is responsible for laying the groundwork for service projects held in conjunction with each concert. The process begins by contacting the host church, usually about six weeks in advance, and asking it to recommend a local community ministry with which to partner.
She researches the recommended ministries and contacts them to determine specific needs the Jubalheirs can help meet. A list of needed items is then distributed among the four vocal sections and the orchestra, with each group assigned particular items to collect. The donations are gathered at the concert site and delivered to the ministry.
Jubalheirs often come early or stay an extra day to help with other projects at the host church or in the community. Some of those projects have included painting buildings or helping with yard work. At their upcoming event on Oct. 23 at First Baptist Church Kingsland, they will help support a food pantry and lead a hymn sing Thursday at an assisted living facility before the Friday evening concert.
Presnal also was heavily involved in helping coordinate projects for the 2025 Jubal ministries mission trip to Cuba, including collecting and packing 72 additional pieces of luggage filled with medicine, eyeglasses, salvation dolls, gifts for pastors' wives, and musical instruments for Cuban churches.
Describing her involvement with the Jubalheirs, she said, “It’s more than just proclaiming Christ, which is the main thing. Jubalheirs is a sisterhood, friends that are family.”
She added, “My greatest joy is serving the Lord and others through missions.”
