MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — Brewton-Parker College is pleased to announce a generous grant of $600,000 from the Holland Underwood Foundation designated for student scholarships within the college’s nursing program and Temple Baptist Theological Seminary. This very significant contribution is being made in honor of Mr. L. A. (Aubrey) Holland and Mr. Joe Underwood, whose legacies of support and commitment continue to make a substantial impact for the betterment of our community and region.

The Holland Underwood Foundation, along with their many other community-improving projects, has been a consistent benefactor of BPC over the years. Their continued generous support has been instrumental in funding numerous BPC needs and scholarships, enhancing the educational experiences and opportunities for students.

The first scholarship recipient from this grant is Joseph “Ty” Kersey, currently a registered nurse who is pursuing an M.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies through TBTS. Dr. Steve Echols, President of Brewton-Parker College, commented that Ty represents the purpose of the establishment of the seminary for training students for ministry. “We are delighted for this grant to be able to support students like Ty who are willing to sacrifice their time and put forth extra effort to become equipped for their calling to Christian vocational ministry. This provision is timely as there is a significant shortage of pastors among Southern Baptist Churches as well as other denominations.”

One-half of the funding will go to nursing scholarships, which will allow students who could not otherwise afford nursing school to attend BPC. President Echols noted that BPC is seeing great success in its new program as 100 percent of the inaugural graduating class passed the Georgia Nursing Licensing Exam on their first attempt, with most of them electing to be employed in this region. Echols expressed BPC’s deep gratitude to the Holland Underwood Foundation and the impact that this legacy gift will make in providing the desperately needed nurses and pastors for our region.
