Every day, people from around the world are forcibly displaced from their homes due to war, persecution, and violence. No matter where your church is located, you have the opportunity to care for these hurting people. Here are six ways your church can care for refugees.
- The most powerful work your church can be a part of is prayer. God can do all things, and He delights when His children bring their requests to Him.
- The church is called to be good stewards. We recognize that everything we have has been given to us by God, and we look for opportunities to give to others. We can care for refugees by offering financial support, collecting material resources like food and clothing, and volunteering our time to assist and build relationships with the displaced people around us.
- Your church can work with a resettlement agency to “adopt” a refugee family. Welcome them into your life and church and walk alongside them as they adapt to their new home.
- Through the gospel, God welcomes us into His family. Churches have an opportunity to show God’s love to refugees by how we welcome them into our city and church.
- The ability to speak the language of their new country is a crucial skill to help refugees succeed. Offer a course that teaches English as a Second Language.
- Set up a mentoring program where refugees are partnered with individuals or families from your church to help them acclimate to their new home. Your culture will likely be very different from the customs they are used to. Having someone to walk alongside them and guide them through a new culture is invaluable.
