THOMSON, Ga. – The longtime pastor of First Baptist Church in Thomson, David Lambert, is expected to be nominated for vice president of the Georgia Baptist Convention at the annual meeting next month in Augusta.
One of Lambert’s own church members, David Miller, said he will make the nomination.
“Proven success speaks volumes when looking for our next leaders,” said Miller, interim pastor at Jewell Baptist Church. “David Lambert is that kind of leader. After observing his leadership as their student minister for 11 years, First Baptist Thomson called this proven man as their lead pastor in 2012.”
The annual meeting is set for November 13-15 at Warren Baptist Church in Augusta, and the registration portal is open for churches to sign up messengers.
The Georgia Baptist Convention, made up of 3,600 churches with 1.4 million members, holds a business meeting each November. People attend from across the state, drawn as much by the fellowship, preaching, and singing as by any business matters on the agenda.
In that meeting, messengers will elect a new president and first, second, third and fourth vice presidents. The rankings of the vice presidents are based on the number of votes they receive.
Miller said Lambert, who received his doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, is leading his congregation “on a path of revitalization to be a disciple-making church as they reach their neighbors and the nations with the Gospel.” Lamber also has an undergraduate degree from Belmont University and a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
First Baptist Thomson gave 5.4% of undesignated receipts through the Cooperative Program last year. That amounted to more than $48,000. The church’s total giving for state, national and international missions last year was more than $120,000.
Miller said Lambert has baptized more than 80 people and added 150 new members since he became pastor at First Baptist Thomson.
“One of his greatest joys has been to walk with families through stages of life,” Miller said. “Many former youth are now Sunday school teachers, deacons, and church leaders. With a heart for Georgia, he has served on the Executive Committee of the GBMB for three years. Dr. David Lambert is a proven leader which is observable in his devotion to his family, his church, and Georgia.”
Lambert and his wife, Julia, have a daughter, Abby.
