SPRINGFIELD, Ga. — First Baptist Church of Springfield suffered a tragic loss Monday when one of their VBS directors was killed in a traffic accident.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Department reported on its Facebook page that emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of McCall Road and Highway 21 in Springfield. Two occupants of a pickup truck were taken to the hospital, and the driver of the other vehicle, Laura Devisscher, was killed

As the church deals with the loss, Pastor Eric Green shared the news that this year’s VBS, scheduled for next week, would be canceled.

Krista Staton, the Georgia Baptist Mission Board’s kids ministry consultant, said that the church had hosted one of the board’s VBS trainings this year, and asked for prayer for the church and pastor as they process the loss.

The church announced on its Facebook page that it would hold a prayer event open to the entire community Wednesday, June 19, at 6 p.m. In this time “of great sorrow and overwhelming need, the best thing we can do is seek the Lord in prayer,” the post said.

Please pray for the family and friends, church and community as they navigate through the next few days and months to come.
