ROME, Ga. — Shorter University’s School of Education recently welcomed elementary and middle school students from across Floyd County to its Thornwood Campus for the annual Floyd County Reading Bowl, creating a day centered on literacy, teamwork, and academic competition.

Student teams from across the county gathered to test their knowledge of selected books in a lively and encouraging environment that celebrated a shared love of reading. The event also offered younger students the opportunity to experience a college campus while connecting with peers from neighboring schools.

Shorter education majors played a key role in making the day a success. From planning logistics and coordinating teams to managing competition rounds and welcoming participants, Shorter students helped lead and run the entire event from start to finish. The experience provided valuable hands-on learning as they applied classroom knowledge in a real-world setting while supporting local students and educators.

“Our goal is always to create meaningful, hands-on opportunities for our education majors,” said Dana King, Dean of Shorter University’s School of Education. “Hosting the Reading Bowl allowed our students to step into leadership, serve local schools, and gain practical experience that will serve them well in their future classrooms. It was a joy to welcome these talented young readers to campus and celebrate their hard work.”

The day was filled with excitement as students competed, encouraged one another, and enjoyed being part of a countywide academic event. Shorter University values opportunities like the Reading Bowl that strengthen partnerships with local schools and allow university students to engage directly with the community they will one day serve.
