SAVANNAH, Ga. — Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief will opening a second recovery site in the Savannah areas on Monday, Aug. 19. The site will be located at Chevis Oaks Baptist Church.

Dwain Carter, mission mobilization/Disaster Relief director for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, wrote in an email to volunteers that all ministry areas will be represented. That includes teams to take care of feeding, incident management, shower trailers, cleanup and recovery, and family care. Chaplains and assessors are also being called to serve

GBDR is already operating relief teams based at Southbridge Community Church in Statesboro.

Carter said that due to the flooding caused by Tropical Storm Debby, the need is great. “Residents are begging for assistance,” he said.

Carter said other states may provide relief teams as well, but that organizations nationwide have been stretched thin by wildfires, wind storms and flooding. Teams of volunteers from Georgia have recently served in Iowa and Texas.

Those willing to assist in Disaster Relief efforts can sign up for training or make a financial donation.
