PLAINS, Ga. — The memorial services for former President Jimmy Carter will culminate Thursday with a private funeral service and burial in Plains, Ga. Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are partnering with other agencies to help feed the hundreds of workers present for those events.
Dwain Carter, director of GBDR, says there are currently some 20 volunteers staffing three different feeding units in Plains. They are collaborating with the Salvation Army and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to feed people from national and state governmental agencies.
The volunteers are providing four meals each day, which includes feeding the teams working overnight shifts.
Carter says, "This is an amazing opportunity to share the love of Jesus with lots of people from all around Georgia and the USA. This is one of the ways that Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief helps to make a dent in the 7 million people in Georgia who don’t have a relationship with the Lord."
Carter’s remains are currently lying in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta. On Tuesday morning he will be flown to Washington, D.C., to lie in state inside the U.S. Capitol Rotunda until Thursday’s funeral at the National Cathedral. The private Plains events will follow later Thursday.
