MOUNT VERNON, Ga. — On Monday, Sept. 19, Brewton-Parker College was privileged to host a policy stop on the Georgia Recovers Bus Tour. This event featured a diverse panel of community members discussing current addiction and recovery policies, focusing on agricultural communities.
As part of National Recovery Month, the Georgia Recovery Bus will be making 63 stops across the state this September. Sponsored by Commissioner Kevin Tanner of the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and backed by the Georgia General Assembly’s Working Group on Addiction and Recovery, the tour aims to spotlight the stories of those who succeeded in recovery, families impacted by addiction, and advocates within the recovery community.
The featured panel consisted of farmers, a medical educator, and several others who have overcome addiction or are close to someone who has. At this specific stop, the panel and audience engaged in a dialog about particular policies and procedures and how they affect the agricultural community.
Dr. Roger Byrd, Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences, was grateful for the opportunity for BPC to host in addition to the exposure and awareness for the students. He stated, “Brewton-Parker College is honored to host the Georgia Recovers Bus Tour. This event not only raises awareness about the critical issues surrounding addiction and recovery but also empowers our students to engage with the real-life experiences of their community.”
In light of raising awareness of addiction and Georgia recovery, BPC was gifted two Overdose Reversal Kits to place on campus grounds.
