A service was held on Sunday, April 30, at Lake Country Baptist church celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the church. The speaker for the worship service was Thomas Hammond, Executive Director/CEO of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board. Following the service, a covered dish dinner was served, and the evening service consisted of music by the church choir and praise team.
Services began in October of 1981 in a house on Haralson Island belonging to Frank and Betty Thompson. These services were the result of efforts by a missions committee from Marshall Memorial Baptist church and a group of people from the lake area. Later, meetings were held in a single-wide trailer which was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Okey Bowen. Soon land on Crooked Creek Road was made available, land was cleared, and a double-wide mobile home was placed on the lot for services. A second mobile home was purchased in January 1984 to be used as a fellowship hall and educational building.
The current brick sanctuary groundbreaking was on February 10, 1991, and the first service in the new sanctuary was held on July 21, 1991. Construction began on the Fellowship Hall in February 2001 and the two buildings were connected in February 2010.
On March 20, 1983, the church was constituted as Manley Memorial Baptist Church with 56 charter members. The name of the church was changed to Lake Country Baptist Church in January 2011 and currently has approximately 350 members. Reverend David Long was the first pastor. Rev. Robert Cash followed with other pastors being Rev. Vince Gammage, Dr. Harry Michael, and Dr. B. Carlisle Driggers. The current pastor is Pete Mattix.
