New City Church Pastor Patrick Thompson speaks about his experience fighting through and recovering from the coronavirus on Fox News. Before planting the church located in Long Island City, NY, Thompson was a Sunday School consultant for Georgia Baptists as well as student and collegiate ministry pastor at churches throughout the state.

Former Georgia Baptist and current New York pastor Patrick Thompson went on Fox News recently to discuss ministry during the coronavirus while recovering from the illness.

Thompson, pastor of New City Church in Long Island City, told of the food delivery ministry he helps facilitate alongside other community partners.

“We knew we couldn’t solve everything in this crisis, but we knew we could solve something,” he said.

Thompson went into self-quarantine three weeks ago upon experiencing symptoms. A subsequent test confirmed that he had COVID-19. And though he wasn’t hospitalized, he noted he was off his feet and in bed for four or five days.

“The symptoms come at you all at once,” he added. “And it doesn’t hit you physically, but mentally as well. It makes you ask a lot of questions about faith and family and what you’re walking through. For me as a pastor, it makes you wonder why our country is walking through this.

“It’s a trust, to learn to trust Him more. It’s not an easy answer. … But as a person of faith, I’m in a completely uncontrollable situation right now,” said Thompson.

That sense of a loss of control, he explained, shows our dependence on God.

“ put me in a completely uncontrollable place in my life. And it really strengthened my faith to have to realize I had to trust somebody beyond me. I had to trust in the Lord beyond myself. That’s what brought me peace.

“It was in my broken nature and … sickness at that time that I truly experienced the most peace because I realized there’s nothing I can do to control this. It’s something I have to trust the Creator of the universe to control and walk me thorough.”

Prior to planting New City Church in 2012 alongside his wife, Katie, and children, PJ and Natalie, Thompson served as a Georgia Baptist consultant in Sunday School ministries. Previously he had served throughout the state in a number of churches as a student and collegiate pastor including Eastside Baptist in Marietta, Lost Mountain Baptist in Powder Springs, Piedmont Church in Marietta, and Sherwood Baptist in Albany.
