WAYNESBORO, Ga. — Pastor Mike Flowers is now in his fifth year at Rosemont Baptist Church in Waynesboro after almost two decades as director of Camp Kaleo. In serving as the director of the camp in Forsyth, he saw thousands of children and youth come to a saving faith in Christ because of his passion to be a Great Commission Christian.
Flowers has now brought that fervor for lost souls to Waynesboro, resulting in the Rosemont Church growing and making a significant impact on the county seat of Burke County.
The transition to Waynesboro began with a Zoom meeting with the Rosemont Pastor Search Committee. Flowers explained, “Both Julie and I experienced a clear sense of purpose during that initial meeting, and within minutes it became evident to me that I was being called to take on the role of pastor at Rosemont.”
The Rosemont pastor’s work ethic is evident. He typically gets to the church by 7:30 a.m. and prayer walks around the church, focusing his intercession on the congregation, staff, ministries, and the community.
“The satisfaction I derive from my ministry is rooted in fulfilling responsibilities where and when I am called to serve,” declared Flowers. “My experience in ministry has demonstrated that effective pastoral leadership involves loving, understanding, equipping the members, and outreach to the wider community. This approach has enhanced my commitment to serving the people of Rosemont with much joy and love. Additionally, both Julie and I have experienced a strong sense of love and support from the congregation.”
When a guest enters the atrium, he is immediately impressed with the emphasis on discipleship – the kind of discipleship that produces disciples that make other disciples.
Flowers testified, “At Rosemont, our mission is to follow Jesus and focus on discipleship. As stated in Mark 1:17, ‘Follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fish for people.’"
The church seeks to build up believers through corporate worship, fellowship, and encouragement, said Flowers. “Our congregation engages through structured groups such as Life Groups, D-life Groups, and Bible studies for men, women, youth, and children, fostering growth and unity in faith according to Christ’s teachings. It is our hope that we continue to strengthen our commitment and purposefully reach out to others, as directed by our Lord Jesus Christ."
Specifically equipping members to share their faith is a key focus for Flowers. “Many pastors agree that evangelism isn't finished until new believers are themselves making disciples," he explained. "Billy Hanks Jr. noted that 90% of Christians, including clergy, have never led someone to faith in Christ — highlighting a major gap in discipleship within churches. If we truly believe in Christ's mission, we must act; we're surrounded by those who haven't heard, and there is no alternative plan. Jesus’s call to ‘make disciples’ drives me to do better.”
Scott Sullivan, Discipleship Catalyst for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, stated, “Pastor Mike has found an effective way to answer a question that most every church was asking coming out of the pandemic. How do we reach new people, connect them to the Church, move them toward spiritual maturity, and launch them to replicate that process? All pastors know they should do that, but many struggle to find traction like Rosemont."
Sometimes, Sullivan continued, "a simple quarter turn twist in perspective can make a big difference. For example, I believe that Bro. Mike sees Rosemont as a launching pad for disciple-making, not a landing pad for disciple pacifying. It thrills my heart that Rosemont is seeking to make multiplying disciples.”
During the summer months, Flowers led the church in an eight-week sermon series entitled, “People Sharing Jesus.” He provided insights from his years of service as a GBMB state missionary. He cited lack of vision, lack of faith, unwillingness to adapt, and insufficient commitment as the main factors contributing to church decline.
During the church’s September Revival, the guest preachers were urged to emphasize the mission of discipleship, focusing on four objectives: gathering, grouping, growing, and Going. Flowers is devoted to helping the congregation become surrendered to bearing witness for Christ. He is leading the church by precept and by example.
Flowers commented, “As part of my outreach efforts, I utilize the red and blue curved cards from LivingWaters.com, which have proven effective in initiating conversations and overcoming barriers with strangers...Additionally, I frequently use the “Steps to Peace with God” tract by Billy Graham."
Flowers regularly shares with the church, both from the pulpit and individually, how to use these tools in evangelism. "By leading through example, I strive to encourage a collective commitment to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ," he said. "Although progress may be gradual, I remain prayerful and hopeful that we will eventually witness the results of these efforts.”
Those who know Flowers best realize that he is constantly seeking opportunities to engage in conversations about his faith and intentionally pursues interactions where sharing the gospel is appropriate. Describing one such opportunity, Flowers said, "During a recent encounter in the church foyer with a young man who was submitting a bid for a project, I observed his interest in the tracts displayed on the table. Upon inquiring if he had seen such materials before, he responded negatively, which allowed me to explain the gospel tract and lead him to Christ.”
In the four years Flowers has been at Rosemont, new Sunday Life Groups have been added. The Sunday morning worship experience has grown, and new chairs have been added to accommodate the current attendance. The membership has grown through new believers being baptized, people uniting with the church by a transfer of church letter, and an influx of visitors who have become members.
Plans are now being made to construct a 10,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility and make modifications to the current sanctuary to provide more room for those who gather for worship.
Jesus said, “Go and make disciples…”(Matthew 28:19). That is precisely what Flowers is leading Rosemont to do.
