Shorter University's award-winning literary magazine seeks submissions for Fall 2025 issue

ROME, Ga. — Chimes, Shorter University’s student-curated literary and arts magazine, is inviting submissions for its 111th issue, centered on the theme “Blood Into Ink.” The theme refers to a statement by T.S. Eliot, who once described what poets do as "turning blood into ink.”

The issue hopes to showcase works that powerfully translate innately human and raw experiences to the printed page and connect to with the heart of every reader.

Submissions are due by Nov. 13, 2025, for the March 2026 release. Chimes accepts submissions year-round, but those received after the deadline will be considered for the following edition. The magazine accepts poetry, short stories, and visual works. Submissions are open to all. For more information on submission guidelines and the submission process, please visit https://thechimes.shorter.edu/about/submission-info/.

First published in 1879, just six years after Shorter University opened its doors, Chimes started as a four-page tabloid and has grown into a nationally recognized literary and arts magazine. Now managed by the English Department, the magazine earned first prize honors from the American Scholastic Press Association from 2019-2023.

Chimes reflects Shorter University’s motto, “Transforming Lives Through Christ,” by encouraging creativity that engages both the mind and the spirit. The university’s mission is to advance God’s Kingdom through academic excellence, spiritual growth, Christian leadership, and global service within the context of a biblical worldview.
