State police says 18 people died in Georgia traffic crashes over July 4th holiday

ATLANTA — The Georgia State Patrol announced Thursday that 18 people died across the state in crashes over the July 4th holiday period. The period began on Friday evening, June 30, and ended Tuesday, July 4, at midnight.

Across the state, troopers investigated nine fatal crashes, and local agencies investigated another nine. The crashes occurred in Atlanta, DeKalb County, Dougherty County, Glynn County, Paulding County, and Pike County.

In addition to fatal crashes, the Department of Public Safety said troopers investigated more than 500 crashes, which resulted in more than 260 injuries. Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division Officers made 20,989 traffic stops and issued more than 12,300 citations and over 15,000 warnings.
