Thursday thoughts: Try seeing the world through the eyes of faith

Posted

I don’t know if you are a contact wearer, but I am. My grandchildren think it’s odd that I wear my glasses on rainy days instead of my contacts. I try to tell them for some reason I just see better with my glasses when it’s raining. The glare from the car lights doesn’t bother me as much and I just seem to focus better.

I was thinking about that on my drive in the other morning since it was raining and I was wearing my glasses. It seems we always compare “hard times” in our life to rainy, cloudy days, or at least I do. The hard or difficult times are those in which we feel like we cannot clearly see the direction in which to go, the clouds are hanging low over us and we just feel the sense of helplessness or despair. Have you been there? I know I have.

On those days when it’s raining, cloudy and gloomy I wear my glasses to see better. It made me stop and think, "Wouldn’t I see those same days clearer with eyes of faith?" When I see my rainy days, my problems, my trials, my despair through the eyes of faith, God is always bigger than those issues. My eyes of faith are based on God and His Word not based on what my human eyes see.

I don’t know about you, but lately when I look at things through my “human eyes” it can be scary. I have friends who are hurting. I know people who are sick. It seems finances are continually tight. If you look around you see arguments, dissension, and people who are angry. There is depression, despair, and just plain fear all around us.

But that is when I look at everything from my human eyes. When my spiritual eyes are open I can see God. I can see that I am not alone. I can see that I am His child and He is in control. The world wants to say “seeing is believing” but God says in John 11:40 “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?”

Believing God is trusting when you cannot see an answer. Believing God is knowing He is there on the rainy days. Believing God is knowing that there is a bigger picture and that no matter what it looks like on the outside, God is still in control.

I can easily get caught up in my own personal circumstances, my problems and issues. All this does is leave me discouraged, anxious, and fearful. I am looking through my eyes and believing what I see, not believing God.  It seems not only in my life but everyone I know is dealing with something “big,” surrounded by issues and difficulties. I’ve said it and I’m sure you have too, there is a feeling of being overwhelmed.

What is the answer? Believe God. Search the Word of God. See a different picture and opportunity through your eyes of faith.

I thought about the words to an old 90s song, “I can see clearly now the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way. Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for. It’s gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiny day.”

Eyes of faith help us see clearly before the rain, in the rain, and when the rain is gone. God is always faithful and keeps His promises. He provides a rainbow somewhere after the rain. Let’s try to focus on our Savior. Then we are able to see clearly and enjoy the rainy days knowing God sends a rainbow because He has it all under control!
