CLEVELAND, Ga.  – The Truett McConnell University athletic department is excited to welcome Joe Herrera as the new TMU Director of Volleyball. Herrera joins TMU with 20-plus years of experience coaching indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and mentoring athletes in their spiritual walks with Christ.

"I'm excited and extremely grateful for the opportunity to coach at Truett McConnell University," said Herrera. "This to me is not a job, but my calling in life. I believe that at this point in my life I'm doing exactly what God wants me to be doing. This is my passion, and I am eager to form relationships with each athlete and use volleyball as the tool to help build and strengthen each of their relationships with God."

In 2016, Herrera was named the GISA Coach of the Year, after leading the TCS Lady Lions to victory in the GISA State Championship. Herrera has spent the last few years coaching the high school volleyball program at Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg, Georgia, where he took a two-year hiatus in 2019 to coach the former Appalachian Athletic Conference member, Point University, women's volleyball program. Herrera led the Skyhawks 2019 team to the National Tournament for the first and only time in Point history.

Herrera, a native of Cuba, came to the United States with his family in 1983, where he lived the remainder of his adolescent years in Miami, Florida. He is a 1993 graduate of Atlantic High School in Delray Beach and holds a bachelor's degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and a Master's in Christian Leadership from Liberty University (2012), while also being ordained as a minister.

Herrera and his wife Kristina have been married for 29 years this upcoming May, and have three children, Joey (21), Emily (18) and Jacob (9).
