Will Judge Brett Kavanaugh be approved as a Supreme Court Justice? I honestly don’t know. In our current socio-political environment, why would anyone want to be nominated for a SCOTUS Justice – or for that matter make himself/herself available for any public service position?
Those who agree to serve or allow their names to be placed on a ballot for some political office are opening up their lives to the most invasive scrutiny and making themselves vulnerable to the most insidious character assassination imaginable.
It would appear that even good, noble, honest people would now have second thoughts about seeking public office, because in our culture reckless accusations have become the equivalent of guilt and culpability. No longer are people innocent until proven guilty.
On Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee Judge Kavanaugh had to face the charges of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who claimed that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in the summer of 1982. The charges leveled against Kavanaugh, who had already endured three weeks of intensive interrogation and cross questioning, had to be the most grueling, heart-rending experience of the Judge’s life.
Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, stated, “Brett Kavanaugh and his family are finding out that the path to a Supreme Court appointment is exacting a price no American should have to pay. Judge Kavanaugh's 10-year-old daughter suggesting that they pray for Dr. Ford tells you a lot about how the family is handling all this.
"It was also difficult not to be moved by the earlier testimony of Dr. Ford. She needed to be heard. I, like most observers, am not suggesting that she was never assaulted. However, there are just too many inconsistencies in the story – and in the left’s handling of it – to suggest that Kavanaugh was the one responsible.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee hearing was so bizarre that Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, who is a member of the Committee said, “I don’t know what happened to Dr. Ford ... and I am very sorry, but I do not believe that Judge Brett Kavanaugh was involved.” He also contended that the hearing was “an intergalactic freak show” and a “grotesque carnival.”
Journalist Howard Kurtz weighed in on the Kavanaugh confirmation hearing and why it showed Congress at its worst and commented, “It would be tempting to call the Brett Kavanaugh hearing a circus, but that would be unfair to clowns and jugglers.”
There are huge issues at stake in this nomination. The confirmation of Kavanaugh could shift the Supreme Court’s balance of power, because Kavanaugh is a committed constitutionalist. His confirmation could give the Court the opportunity to revisit the Supreme Court’s botched decisions on abortion and marriage.
The Left obviously doesn’t want Kavanaugh confirmed, so they have tried to discredit, demean, and disgrace him. The same smear tactics were employed when Clarence Thomas was seeking confirmation as a SCOTUS Justice. Judge Roy Moore knows something about losing a senate race, because of a public smear campaign.
When it appeared to some that Kavanaugh had enough votes for his confirmation the “progressives,” or liberals, decided to extend the vetting process by calling for an additional FBI investigation. That is somewhat curious, because I thought the FBI was under investigation.
The truth is that there have been individuals in high places in the United States government who have tried to make sure Brett Kavanaugh would never be confirmed. When the rush to judgment didn’t work, the decision was made to delay the process if that would serve to impede or obstruct the confirmation.
I am glad God doesn’t rush to judgment in our case. In fact, God loves us with an unconditional, everlasting love and He demonstrates it by his longsuffering. Psalm 86:15 says, “But You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and truth.”
Peter, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, writes, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” (II Peter 3:9).
God is just and is prepared to punish us for our sins, but He really doesn’t want to condemn us. He is longsuffering. He wants to confirm us; and He can do that if we have placed our everlasting trust in His only begotten Son.
