Help people find their identity spiritually and sexually

Last April retail giant  Target made an announcement that created a bit of angst among folks whose lives are marked by civility and decency. The Corporation announced it would allow men to use the women’s restrooms and dressing rooms in their stores.

The Target website explained, “We welcome transgendered team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facilities that corresponds with their gender identity... Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.”

In other words, if a man feels like a woman on a particular day, he can enter a women’s restroom irrespective of whether or not it is already occupied by young girls or women.

The American Family Association stated, “Target’s policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims. And with Target publicly boasting that men can enter women’s bathrooms, where do you think predators are going to go?” Last September it was reported that police in Dallas, TX were looking for a man who took pictures of a woman trying on clothes in a Target store. Similar stories have been reported in Eugene, OR; Bedford, NH; Frisco, TX; and Idaho Falls, ID, to name a few.

Consequently, the AFA called for a boycott of Target retail stores. Last spring, the AFA delivered the first one million signatures to the Target Corporation’s offices in Minneapolis, MN.

Interestingly, NBC News stated that in response to the boycott, Target tried to make a fitting response. They reported, “Facing a growing boycott over its recently adopted policy allowing transgender employees and customers to use the bathroom and fitting rooms in accordance with their (perceived) gender identities, Target Corp. announced ... that it would spend $20 million to add single-stall bathrooms at all of its stores."

This week (May 23) Tim Wildmon, president of the American Family Association (AFA), delivered another 500,000 signatures on petitions of people pledging to boycott Target stores.

According to Wall Street’s Best Daily, Target stock “rose to a high of $84.00 in April 2016. On May 24 this year, Target’s stock was $54.21. That is a precipitous drop in just over one year. It is even worse when you compare the loss of almost $40 per share of Target stock to a $10 increase in WalMart Stock."

The Target boycott says volumes about what people of conviction can accomplish if they band together for a cause. Transgendered people must be loved, but tough love stands on principles. Genesis 5:2 says, “Male and female created He (God) them; and blessed them.” We need to love transgendered people enough to help them find their identity both spiritually and sexually.”
