MOUNT VERNON — After serving as dean of men and assistant women’s basketball coach for a year, Steve Edwards has been named campus pastor and head women’s basketball coach of Brewton-Parker College. Previously, Daniel Prevett served as head women’s basketball coach, but the transition will allow him to focus on his role as athletic director.

“We are grateful that God has sent Steve Edwards to BPC and for his willingness to serve in his new role as campus pastor along with being the head coach for women’s basketball,” said Steve Echols, BPC president.

“In many ways, he has already been functioning as a pastor in the ministry he has established. Steve has a great heart for discipleship and for spiritually mentoring our students. We are also grateful to the Georgia Baptist Mission Board for providing Lauren Youmans in her position as BCM campus minister.

“They, along with Rebekah Meahl as dean of students, Dave Eppling as vice president for student development, and the rest of our student development team are committed to leading our students to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.”

'Honored to serve'

When asked about his new position, Edwards declared, “I'm truly honored to serve as campus pastor. My purpose in life is to help young people maximize their potential academically, athletically, and spiritually. My role as campus pastor allows me to focus on the needs of our students and I take great pride in helping our students succeed.

“I would like to thank Dr. Echols for believing in my vision as a leader and I consider it a blessing to play a role in impacting the lives of our students.”

Edwards came to the South Georgia college from Tennessee Temple University, where he was assistant men’s basketball coach. While there he was instrumental in leading the Crusaders to a national championship while also serving as primary recruiter. Prior to joining the university Edwards coached at Newton (MS) High School in East Central Community College in Decatur, MS.

Edwards holds a Bachelor of Arts from Spring Hill College, where he played basketball for two years. He also holds a Master of Arts in Leadership from Tennessee Temple University.

Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four-year Christian college south of Macon and north of Jacksonville, FL.
