ATLANTA – The Port of Savannah moved an all-time high 519,390 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) last month, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported Wednesday. That broke the previous record of 504,350 TEUs set last October and exceeded May of last year by 8.3%.

ATLANTA – Georgia Power would retire two coal-burning units and two gas-fired turbines at two power plants by the beginning of August under an agreement filed with the state Public Service Commission (PSC) Monday. But the Atlanta-based utility also would put the brakes on a proposal to develop 1,000 megawatts of energy generating capacity through battery storage by 2030.

LAGRANGE, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia woman remains in critical condition, two days after she was injured and her granddaughter drowned while they were fishing on a lake. Sgt. Stewart Smith of the Troup County Sheriff’s Office says Monday that 40-year-old Stephanie Walker was in Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. Her granddaughter, 13-year-old Makayla “Kayla” Prather was pronounced dead Saturday at West Point Lake, near the Alabama state line.

WACO, Ga. (AP) — A company that makes concrete pipe and other products says it will restart a shuttered plant in west Georgia. Foley Products Co. said Friday that it will reopen its plant in Waco, Georgia, in July. Foley Products says it will hire 50 employees at the Haralson County site west of Atlanta.

ATLANTA (AP) — Federal officials have fined two Georgia hospitals more than $1 million for failing to meet new requirements to publicly disclose their charges. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Friday Northside Hospital Atlanta and Northside Hospital Cherokee are the first two hospitals in the country to face monetary penalties under the rules that went into effect last year.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia will go a third year without assigning A-to-F grades to public schools and districts because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal government is waiving part of the requirements for the state’s normal evaluation system. Instead, the state will publish multiple measures that are normally parts of the overall grade.

ATLANTA – Georgia Power completed a demonstration project this week blending hydrogen with natural gas at the utility’s Plant McDonough-Atkinson in Smyrna. The project was the first to test a blend of 20% hydrogen in a natural gas turbine in North America.

MACON, Ga. (AP) — Middle Georgia’s largest city has bulldozed a homeless camp, saying it was a health hazard. Local news outlets report that Macon-Bibb County crews on Wednesday cleared the camp near the Ocmulgee River north of downtown Macon. City-county officials say they told camp residents last week that they had to leave, citing a lack of sanitation and open fires near gas stations.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is hiring a Fulton County prosecutor to lead the state’s new gang prosecution unit. Carr announced Wednesday that Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Cara Convery will run the unit when it starts operating July 1.

PEMBROKE, Ga. (AP) — A coastal Georgia county is restarting court trials and government services after a deadly tornado damaged a courthouse and other government buildings on April 5. Court proceedings resumed this week in a part of the Bryan County courthouse that wasn’t damaged when the twister hit Pembroke.

State tax revenues see slight uptick

ATLANTA – Georgia tax collections rose slightly last month compared to May of last year after two consecutive months of soaring revenues caused by a delay in last year’s filing deadline until mid-May. The state Department of Revenue collected almost $2.7 billion last month, up 1.6% from May of 2021.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia health officials say the first case of monkeypox has been confirmed in the state. The Georgia Department of Public Health announced the news Monday on Twitter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that a suspected case found last week is monkeypox.

ATLANTA – The Alabama company looking to open a titanium mine near the Okefenokee Swamp is being confronted with an additional hurdle. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reversed an earlier approval of the project and now will require Twin Pines Minerals to reapply for a federal permit. The company already is seeking permits from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.  

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Just in time for summer, Georgia's largest public beach is banning smoking in the sand. City officials on Tybee Island decided to snuff out cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco products on its beaches in an effort to reduce litter.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A Japanese equipment maker plans to spend $140 million on a new factory in Georgia, adding 500 workers to the 3,000 it already employs in the northeastern part of the state. Kubota Corp. says the new factory will make front-end loaders, opening in Gainesville in 2024.

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) — One person was hospitalized Thursday and others were sickened by a possible hazardous materials release at a Georgia warehouse. Dublin Fire Chief Matthew Cutler tells local news outlets that firefighters were called to the Best Buy distribution center. More than 20 employees were complaining of irritation to their eyes, nose, and throat from an unknown powdered substance.

VIDALIA, Ga. (AP) — Officials have confirmed a highly contagious variety of bird flu in a backyard flock in southeast Georgia. State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black says it's the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in domesticated birds in Georgia this year. The Toombs County resident kept a flock of chickens, turkeys, ducks, peafowl and other birds. He noticed dozens of ducks died in a 24-hour period.

ATLANTA – NBCUniversal Media (NBCU) has entered into a long-term agreement with Atlanta-based Gray Television to lease and operate new studio facilities at Gray’s Assembly Atlanta development in Doraville. Construction will begin this summer at the former site of a General Motors plant, creating up to 1,200 construction jobs.  

ATLANTA – The Georgia Board of Community Health voted Thursday to seek federal approval of a plan to extend Medicaid coverage to new mothers for up to one year after their babies are born.
