Wanted: New homes for historic bridges

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Transportation is trying to find homes for historic bridges that have outlived their usefulness and need to be replaced. The agency’s Office of Environmental Services announced Wednesday the launching of a website that will spread the word about historic bridges that are available for relocation and preservation.

The Georgia Baptist Mission Board has a mission. That mission is to support pastors, strengthen churches, and reach the lost with the Gospel. One of the most visible ways in which the board uses contributions to the Cooperative Program to further those goals is the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief program.

ATLANTA (AP) — Nick Carusillo died when he was hit by multiple vehicles on a Georgia interstate, just days after he was abruptly discharged from an addiction treatment center. Now his parents hope a substantial jury verdict in their favor will prompt change that helps others suffering from mental illness and substance abuse.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Rookie Spencer Strider overcame a rough start, Vaughn Grissom and Dansby Swanson homered and the Atlanta Braves won their seventh in a row, beating the Oakland Athletics 7-3. Robbie Grossman, Marcell Ozuna and Ronald Acuña Jr. also drove in runs for Atlanta, which beat Oakland for the 11th straight time dating to 2008.

LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace says Queen Elizabeth II has been placed under medical supervision because doctors are “concerned for Her Majesty’s health.” Members of the royal family traveled to Scotland to be with the 96-year-old monarch.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The European Central Bank has made its largest-ever interest rate increase to combat record inflation that is squeezing consumers and pushing the 19 countries that use the euro currency toward recession.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Memphis, Tennessee have arrested a man they say drove around the city for hours shooting at people. Four victims are dead and three others are wounded after seven shootings and at least two carjackings.

LAREDO, Texas (BP) — A new ministry center will open in Laredo, Texas, as part of a partnership between Texas Baptists River Ministry and Send Relief. The center will serve Laredo and the wider Rio Grande Valley area by connecting churches to ministry opportunities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

ROSTHERN, Saskatchewan (AP) — Canadian police say the final suspect in the stabbing rampage in and around a Canadian reserve has died after being arrested. One official says he died of self-inflicted injuries. Police say 32-year-old Myles Sanderson was caught Wednesday on a highway near the town of Rosthern in Saskatchewan as officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle being driven by a man armed with a knife.

VALDOSTA, Ga. – People who know Jeanette Coody describe her as a charming and self-assured lady with an unflinching commitment when it comes to matters of faith. The Georgia woman who turns 100 on September 19 hasn’t missed Sunday school since she first started attending a class she organized at age 17. “I said, ‘God, if you will allow me to start this program, I will be faithful to it,’” she said. “And I have been.”

NEW YORK (AP) — A radio host has admitted he falsely claimed agent Casey Close never informed first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves’ last contract offer. Doug Gottlieb tweeted on June 29 that “Casey Close never told Freddie Freeman about the Braves final offer,” Close and Excel Sports Management sued Gottlieb in mid-July in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, alleging defamation by libel.

DETROIT (AP) — A judge has struck down Michigan’s 1931 anti-abortion law, months after suspending it last spring. Judge Elizabeth Gleicher of the Court of Claims said the law violates the Michigan Constitution. It was long dormant before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June. The 1931 law makes it a crime to perform abortions unless the life of the mother is in danger.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Operators of California’s electricity grid say a miscommunication led to a small number of power shutoffs as the power system was under great strain. The head of the California Independent System Operator says the miscommunication occurred Tuesday afternoon with a Northern California utility. President and CEO Elliot Mainzer says utilities had been told to be prepared to institute rotating outages but the grid operator never gave the final order to do so.

VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) — A roofing company plans a factory in the south Georgia city of Valdosta, investing $146 million and hiring 135 workers over six years. GAF made the announcement Wednesday. Construction is supposed to start this fall, with production beginning in early 2024. The company will make a plastic membrane used to roof commercial buildings.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Kay is gaining strength in the Pacific and lashing Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, where authorities have opened shelters for those who need to evacuate. Forecasters say there’s a chance outer bands of the big storm could bring heavy rain — and possibly flash floods — to parts of scorched Southern California and southwestern Arizona Friday night and Saturday.

Hispanic Missions Sunday is a day to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of Hispanic International Mission Board missionaries and Hispanic churches as active partners with the International Mission Board in bringing the gospel to the nations. This year, the board is asking churches to observe Sept. 25 as Hispanic Mission Sunday.

BENGHAZI, Libya (BP) — Ronnie and Anita Smith had the blessing of Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas, when they embarked on a mission to spread agape love in Benghazi amid rising terrorism from Islamic extremists. As Ronnie jogged on a street not far from the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi, the site of the 2012 terrorist attack by Ansar al-Sharia, gunmen approached in a black jeep and shot Ronnie dead. Anita extended forgiveness to the murderers just days later in interviews widely broadcast in Arabic in the country where the faith of most encourages retribution over forgiveness.

BANGKOK (AP) — Members of a Chinese church are seeking refuge in Thailand, saying they face state harassment and possible deportation. For years, the Shenzhen Holy Reformed Church has been fleeing the Chinese government, with members facing threats and family members hauled in for police questioning. They left China three years ago for South Korea, citing religious restrictions. But safety has been elusive, with the South Korean government declining to grant the members asylum.

Thomas Tuchel has been fired by Chelsea only one month into the season. The decision by Chelsea’s new American ownership comes a day after the team lost to Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 in its first group match of the Champions League. Chelsea has lost two of its first six games in the Premier League.

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says European Union countries should set a price cap on Russian natural gas. She also said Wednesday that European oil and gas companies are making extraordinary profits as the war in Ukraine drives up energy costs and that the bloc's executive arm will propose they make a “solidarity contribution.”

BATH, Maine (AP) — The Navy is getting ready to turn the chapter on its workhorse destroyer, the Arleigh Burke, which went into production more than 30 years ago. The Navy has awarded design contracts on a future ship that would be equipped with lasers and hypersonic missiles. The stakes are high when it comes to a replacement for the backbone of the fleet at a time when China's numerical advantage becomes greater each year.
