Catastrophic flooding in Pakistan has submerged one-third of the nation under water. The heavy monsoon rains displaced 3.1 million people and destroyed more than half a million homes. Many of those who lost their homes are now in displacement camps. Others are seeking higher ground. The disaster has, so far, left more than 1,300 people dead. More than 450 of the casualties are children.

ATLANTA – Georgia and 31 other states have reached a $438.5 million settlement with Juul Labs in a lawsuit over the e-cigarette manufacturer’s marketing and sales practices. The agreement announced Tuesday ends a two-year bipartisan investigation that revealed Juul aggressively marketed to underage users with launch parties, ads using young models, social media posts and free samples.

NEW YORK (AP) — Frances Tiafoe has ended Rafael Nadal’s 22-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments by beating the 22-time major champion 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open’s fourth round. Tiafoe is a 24-year-old from Maryland who is seeded 22nd at Flushing Meadows and reached the second major quarterfinal of his career. He is the youngest American man to get that far at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2006.

BERLIN (AP) — A new report says Russia sent significantly more oil and coal to India and China over the summer compared with the start of the year, while European countries that long relied on Russian energy have cut back sharply in response to the war in Ukraine. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air said Tuesday that Russia received about 158 billion euros in revenue for the sale of oil, natural gas and coal from February to August.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — The U.N. refugee agency has rushed in more desperately needed aid to flood-stricken Pakistan as the nation’s prime minister traveled to the south where rising waters of Lake Manchar pose a new threat. Two UNHCR planes touched down on Monday in the southern port city of Karachi and two more were expected later in the day. A third plane, with aid from Turkmenistan also landed in Karachi.

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — A suspected jihadi roadside bomb hit a convoy in northern Burkina Faso, killing at least 35 people and injuring dozens more. The governor of Sahel region, Lt. Col. Rodolphe Sorgho, said that a supply convoy escorted by the army was hit while driving between Bourzanga and Djibo towns with one of the vehicles carrying civilians. He said the wounded have been evacuated and the area of the explosion has been secured.

Footage online showed workers wearing top-to-bottom protective gear preventing residents of apartment buildings from exiting through locked lobby doors following Monday’s 6.8 magnitude quake.

DALLAS (AP) — The summer vacation season is winding down, and for airlines that means the return of business travelers is very important. Leisure travel in the United States is roughly back to pre-pandemic levels, but airlines say business is still about 25% below 2019 levels. Business travelers generally pay higher fares, so the absence of so many of them has an outsized impact on airline revenue and profit. The Global Business Travel Association predicts that corporate travel won’t fully return until mid-2026.

ATLANTA (AP) — DJ Uiagalelie threw for one touchdown and ran for another, overcoming a sluggish start in the season opener as No. 4 Clemson pulled away for a 41-10 victory over Georgia Tech on Monday night. Uiagalelie completed 19 of 32 passes for 209 yards, including a 6-yard scoring play to Beaux Collins that gave the Tigers a two-touchdown lead in the first half.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Europe’s largest nuclear plant has been knocked off Ukraine’s electricity grid after its last transmission line was disconnected as a result of a fire caused by shelling. The International Atomic Energy Agency said it was informed Monday by Ukrainian authorities that the reserve line was deliberately disconnected in order to extinguish a fire. The line is to be reconnected once the fire is extinguished.

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for nine people who were missing after a floatplane crashed in the waters northwest of Seattle. The body of a 10th person was recovered by a good Samaritan on Sunday. The Coast Guard says all next of kin had been notified of Monday's decision to suspend the search. The Coast Guard says the Northwest Seaplanes flight left Friday Harbor, a popular tourist destination in the San Juan Islands, and was headed to Renton Municipal Airport, the company’s base.

WELDON, Saskatchewan (AP) — Canadian police say one of the suspects in the killing of 10 people in a series of stabbings has been found dead, and his injuries are not self-inflicted. Police say his brother, who is also a suspect, may be injured and remains on the run. Regina Police Chief Evan Bray said Damien Sanderson, 31, has been found dead and they believe Myles Sanderson, 30, is in Regina, Saskatchewan.

SUMMERVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Flood watches are in effect in the U.S. southeast as forecasters warn of the possibility of torrential downpours across already saturated ground. Forecasters said waves of showers and storms were expected to develop Monday in the region, as moisture from the Gulf of Mexico continued to stream across the South. Parts of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia were under flash flood watches through Monday evening.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Columbia’s old Rosewood Baptist Church may never not look like a church. This fall, when residents fill into modern new apartments inside the half-century-old sanctuary, they’ll set their dining tables beneath 40-foot arched windows, once filled by colorful stained glass. Their decor will be flanked by the old church’s dark oak panels; some will have the white-painted cinder block walls of former Sunday school classrooms. Someone’s living room will sit roughly in the footprint of the former baptismal pool.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — OPEC and allied oil-producing countries, including Russia, have cut their supplies to the global economy by 100,000 barrels per day, underlining their unhappiness with crude prices that have sagged because of recession fears. The decision Monday by energy ministers means the cut for October rolls back the mostly symbolic increase of the same amount in September.

This falls just short of a formal famine declaration in Somalia as thousands are dying in a historic drought made worse by the effects of the war in Ukraine.
