SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An Arizona woman has died after she was swept away during flash flooding four days ago at Utah’s Zion National Park. Zion National Park spokesman Jonathan Shafer said in a news release Tuesday afternoon that the body of 29-year-old Jetal Agnihotri was found Monday. That ended a four-day search and rescue mission that extended beyond the park’s southern border.

BEIJING (AP) — Twin giant pandas have been born at a breeding center in southwestern China, a sign of progress for the country’s unofficial national mascot as it struggles for survival amid climate change and loss of habitat. The male and female cubs are the second pair of twins born to their mother, Qin Qin.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says he is sending $2.98 billion in new military aid to Ukraine that will enable forces there to fight for years to come. Biden's announcement Wednesday comes six months after Russia invaded Ukraine and as Ukraine is celebrating its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. The new U.S. aid will train and equip Ukrainian forces for a longer-term fight.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Max Fried allowed three hits in eight innings, pacing the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Fried (12-4) struck out seven and walked one, retiring 20 of the final 23 batters he faced. The All-Star left-hander got through eight innings for the second time this season.

DEMOREST, Ga. (AP) — Sandra Deal, the wife of former Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal, has died at 80. Deal was noted for her advocacy of early literacy during her husband’s two terms. Her family said Deal died Tuesday at her home in Demorest from breast cancer that metastasized into brain cancer. Deal worked as a teacher in Hall County for more than 15 years.

ATLANTA— A juvenile court must reevaluate the sincerity of parents’ objections to their children’s vaccinations, the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday.  At issue is whether children in temporary state custody can be immunized with routine childhood vaccines over their parents’ religious objections – and how to decide if those objections are sincere or not.  

LOCUST GROVE, Ga. (AP) — Bird flu has killed hundreds of wild vultures at a Georgia sanctuary that houses more than 1,500 other animals. Noah’s Ark officials tell news outlets that no other birds have tested positive or shown symptoms. Officials say they were told Saturday that initial tests indicate the vultures died of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain.

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is allotting $125 million in federal COVID-19 relief money to expand school-based health centers. The state Department of Education will give out grants of up to $1 million apiece to start health centers that will care for students, and in some cases, community members.

MORROW, Ga. (AP) — A specially appointed prosecutor said he will not pursue charges against the two white Atlanta police officers who clashed with Rayshard Brooks during a June 2020 encounter that ended with the 27-year-old Black man’s fatal shooting. Pete Skandalakis said he believes Officer Garrett Rolfe, who shot and killed Brooks, acted appropriately. He also said the second officer involved in the encounter, Officer Devin Brosnan, will not be charged.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a May crash in California’s wine country and was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation. Napa County Superior Court Judge Joseph Solga said Paul Pelosi already served two days in jail and received conduct credit for two other days.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Monday announced the arrival of a male white rhino born to a first-time mother. The park tweeted a video of the curious new calf following his mom, Livia, around at the Nikita Rhino Resource Center. The unnamed calf conceived through natural breeding with father J Gregory was born on Aug. 6.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama coach Nick Saban is getting a new eight-year contract worth at least $93.6 million, eclipsing the recent megadeal of Southeastern Conference rival Kirby Smart. The University of Alabama trustees compensation committee approved a one-year extension through Feb. 28, 2030, for the 70-year-old Saban, who has led the Crimson Tide to six national titles.

The downpours continue to inundate villages across the east African nation. The spokesman for Sudan’s National Council for Civil Defense said on Tuesday that at least 36 people have been injured since May.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — On the eve of Ukraine’s independence day, warnings that Moscow might attack significant government and civilian targets are causing unease in the war-weary country. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv urged U.S. citizens in Ukraine to depart the country immediately. The Kyiv regional government banned mass events until Thursday due to fears of Russian missile attacks.

BEIJING (AP) — With China’s biggest freshwater lake reduced to just 25% of its usual size by drought, work crews are digging trenches to keep water flowing to irrigate crops. The dramatic decline of water coverage in Poyang Lake in southeastern China otherwise had cut off irrigation channels in one of China’s key rice-growing regions. But state media report the crews are working only after dark due to the extreme daytime heat.

CHARLEROI, Belgium (AP) — A Belgian-British teenage pilot is set to become the youngest person to fly around the world solo in a small plane. Mack Rutherford landed Tuesday in southern Belgium ahead of the penultimate leg of his global odyssey. Weather permitting, the 17-year-old aviator is due to land in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, on Wednesday, some five months after setting out. That would break the record set by 18-year-old Travis Ludlow in 2021.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The two top officials of Hungary’s meteorological service have been fired after an inaccurate rain forecast prompted the postponement of a fireworks display on the country’s most important national holiday. The firings of the head and deputy head of the National Meteorological Service on Monday are prompting accusations of political interference from Hungary’s nationalist government.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A tropical storm lashed the northern Philippines with strong winds and rain, injuring at least two people and prompting the president to close schools and government offices in the capital and outlying provinces. The closures come just one day after schools across the Philippines held their first face-to-face classes in two years. Storm Ma-on weakened slightly as it barreled through mountainous northern provinces after slamming into Maconacon town in Isabela province Tuesday morning.
