ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Lawmakers in southwestern Nigeria say more than 50 people are feared dead after gunmen opened fire and detonated explosives at a church. Ogunmolasuyi Oluwole with the Ondo State House of Assembly said the gunmen targeted the St Francis Catholic Church in Ondo state on Sunday morning just as the worshippers gathered for the weekly Mass.

The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is headed toward Bermuda after dumping rain on Florida, flooding some roads. Alex reached tropical storm force after strengthening off Florida’s east coast early Sunday. National Hurricane Center forecasters say Alex had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph and was centered about 550 miles west-southwest of Bermuda on Sunday.

RANVILLE, France (AP) — More than 20 British World War II veterans have gathered near Pegasus Bridge for D-Day commemorations in Normandy. The bridge is one of the first sites liberated by Allied forces from Nazi Germany. A series of commemorations are honoring the nearly 160,000 troops from Britain, the United States, Canada and elsewhere who landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia took aim at Western military supplies for Ukraine by launching airstrikes on Kyiv that it claimed destroyed tanks donated from abroad. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin warned Sunday that any Western deliveries of long-range rocket systems would prompt Moscow to hit “objects that we haven’t yet struck.”

LONDON (AP) — Queen Elizabeth II has appeared at the balcony of Buckingham Palace, delighting fans who had hoped to catch a glimpse of her during the final day of festivities marking the monarch’s 70 years on the throne. The 96-year-old monarch has curtailed her schedule in recent months due to problems moving around.

PARIS (AP) — Rafael Nadal beat Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 in the French Open final for his 14th championship at Roland Garros and 22nd Grand Slam title overall. Those add to two records Nadal already owned. His victory Sunday came two days after his 36th birthday and made him the oldest title winner in the history of the clay-court tournament. The Spaniard’s first triumph there came in 2005 at age 19. No man or woman ever has won the singles trophy at any major event more than his 14 in Paris.

Race officials say an Iditarod sled dog has been found after disappearing from a race checkpoint three months ago and covering nearly 150 miles. The Iditarod Trail Committee says Saturday that musher Sebastien Dos Santos Borges of France has been reunited with Leon. Race officials say Leon was captured in the Alaska city of McGrath, over 120 miles south of the Ruby checkpoint.

When Martha Day began volunteering at a pregnancy center, she came face to face with a need that needed to be met. Instead of waiting for someone else to step up, she did it herself. And, for that, Day deserves great thanks.

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A massive fire at a container depot near a port city in southeastern Bangladesh has killed at least 49 people including nine firefighters and injured more than 100 others. Firefighters on Sunday struggled as the blaze continued into a second night. The inferno at the BM Inland Container Depot, a Dutch-Bangladesh joint venture, broke out around midnight Saturday following explosions in a container full of chemicals.

DENVER (AP) — Adam Duvall capped a four-run 11th inning with a two-run homer and the Atlanta Braves spoiled the debut of Colorado’s new “City Connect” uniforms by beating the Rockies 6-2. Marcell Ozuna and William Contreras each hit a two-out, run-scoring double off Jhoulys Chacín to set the stage for Duvall.

Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern and Kennesaw State all won their regional NCAA baseball tournament games on Saturday.

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Just in time for summer, Georgia's largest public beach is banning smoking in the sand. City officials on Tybee Island decided to snuff out cigarette smoking and use of other tobacco products on its beaches in an effort to reduce litter.

DENVER (AP) — Max Fried pitched eight scoreless innings, Matt Olson hit a two-run single in the 10th and the Atlanta Braves beat the Colorado Rockies 3-1 to become the last major league team to win three straight games this season.

PARIS (AP) — Top-ranked Iga Swiatek has beaten 18-year-old American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in the French Open final to collect her second title at Roland Garros and stretch her winning streak to 35 matches. Swiatek’s unbeaten run equals one by Venus Williams in 2000 as the longest this century.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Abbott says it's restarted production at the Michigan factory that's tied to the ongoing baby formula shortage. The plant has been closed since February due to contamination, and that's led to nationwide supply problems for formulas needed to feed infants. The reopening isn't expected to have an immediate affect on availability.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Ann Turner Cook, whose cherubic baby face was known the world over as the original Gerber baby, has died. She was 95. Gerber announced Cook’s passing in an Instagram post on Friday. Cook was 5 months old when a neighbor, artist Dorothy Hope Smith, drew a charcoal sketch of her that was later submitted for a contest Gerber was holding for a national marketing campaign for baby food.

Parts of Florida were facing heavy rain and wind as a storm system that battered Mexico moves across the state. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm once known as Agatha in the Pacific Ocean will be known as Alex in the Atlantic Ocean basin if it reaches tropical storm status. Several Miami streets were flooded and authorities were towing abandoned vehicles.

LONDON (AP) — Prince Charles and his son Prince William have honored the past and looked to the future as they paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II at a star-studded concert outside Buckingham Palace celebrating the monarch’s 70 years on the throne. The 96-year-old monarch did not attend the concert, but she delighted the crowds when she appeared in a surprise video recorded with an animated version of another British national treasure: Paddington Bear.

BAKHMUT, Ukraine (AP) — Block-by-block fighting is raging in two key eastern Ukrainian cities on the 100th day of Russia’s war, grinding them to rubble. The governor of the Luhansk region says that fierce battles continue in Sievierodonetsk and that the Russians continue to pummel neighboring Lysychansk. Those are the only two cities in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province not controlled by Russian forces or Moscow-backed separatists. The Russians have been trying to encircle them.
